- Set to do battle with the BYD Dolphin and Nissan Micra

Give a big welcome to one of Britain’s cheapest new electric vehicles - the MG4 EV Urban.
You might already be familiar with the MG4 EV. It was launched back in 2022 and quickly set about winning an army of admirers by securing scores of industry awards for its value and road-going manners.
The regular MG4 EV costs from £29,995.
But this new Urban variant begins at just £23,495, which makes it an eye-catching and affordable alternative to the likes of the BYD Dolphin and the Nissan Micra EV.
Here’s everything you need to know.

What is the MG4 EV Urban?
The MG4 EV Urban is a cheaper, more city-centric version of the regular MG4 EV.
It looks different to the standard MG4 EV, too.
Instead of the regular car’s sharp lines and shark-nose front end, the MG4 EV takes a more minimalist, almost Tesla-esque approach to its design.
There’s a shorter bonnet, rounder nose, and less pronounced air intakes. The front headlights are smaller and curvier while the Urban model also comes with roof rails as standard.
Size wise, the Urban model boasts similar proportions to the common-or-garden MG4 EV, though it’s slightly longer by about 108mm.
The other thing you need to know is that the MG4 EV Urban is front-wheel drive, while the MG4 EV is rear-wheel drive.

What’s the driving range of the MG4 EV Urban?
MG hasn’t officially revealed precise UK range figures for the MG4 EV Urban just yet - but we can have an educated guess.
The Urban will be offered with either a 43 kWh battery (201 miles of range, roughly) or a larger 54 kWh battery (258 miles of range, give or take).
MG says the Urban with the Comfort Long Range battery is priced at £25,495 while the Premium Long Range (same 54 kWh battery but more features) is available from £27,995.
Expect power of either 149 PS or 160 PS and a 0-62mph time of 9.6 to 9.5 seconds.

How does that compare with the MG4 EV Urban’s rivals?
The Nissan Micra EV will journey up to 260 miles on a single charge while the BYD Dolphin will do around 265 miles before the battery runs dry.
You might also want to consider the similarly-styled but pricier VW ID.3.
What kit comes as standard with the MG4 EV Urban?
The base Comfort models boast 16-inch alloys, a 12.8-inch touchscreen with sat nav and 7-inch digital driver display, reversing camera, rear parking sensors, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
You also get safety tech like adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist while, crucially, an efficiency-boosting heat pump is standard.
The Premium model adds goodies like a 360-degree camera, wireless phone charging, larger 17-inch alloys, and heated front seats.

What about the regular MG4 EV? Any news?
The standard MG4 EV has also been treated to a nip and a tuck.
There’s little in the way of cosmetic tweaks but MG says the base model (Premium Long Range) is actually cheaper than before (at £29,995 - a £2,750 reduction from the outgoing model).
The Premium Extended Range car, priced from £32,995, also delivers an improved 338 miles of range from a single charge, ‘making it one of the lowest priced new cars with the longest range available in the UK today’, MG tells us.

You can also choose to lease the blisteringly-quick and all-wheel drive MG4 EV XPOWER (prices start at £33,995).
The XPOWER model enjoys power of 435 PS and can accelerate from 0-62mph in just 3.8 seconds, which is just 0.1 of a second slower than the all-wheel drive Porsche Taycan 4S.
We’ll bring you leasing prices as we get them.
