Soft-top G-Wagon set for comeback

  • New Mercedes‑Benz G‑Class Cabriolet revealed
  • Seen here in prototype form undergoing tests
  • Fabric roof for open-top driving experience
  • Not the first rag-top G-Wagon
  • First example dates all the way back to 1979

Mercedes-Benz is about to launch the next big thing in posh Chelsea tractors - a soft-top version of its iconic G-Wagon.

The Merc G-Class has long been associated with fabric sliding roofs.

In fact, when the G-Wagon first launched in the UK back in 1979 it was immediately available with the option of open-top motoring.

But it’s been more than ten years since the G500 Cabriolet ceased production in 2013 (though we did get an uber posh, limited edition Mercedes‑Maybach G650 Landaulet in 2017… which cost an eye-watering £550,000).

So it’s only right that the rag-top G-Wagon is now on the comeback trail.

We know little about it as yet, other than that it’s undergoing road trials in Austria and is seen here in disguised form.

What’s also interesting is that the incoming Cabriolet is a four-door SUV, having been a short-wheelbase, two-door affair in previous years.

A spokesperson tells us: “The eagerly awaited new G‑Class Cabriolet is completing its first test kilometres in Austria. Engineers are gathering comprehensive data to ensure that the open-top driving experience of the G‑Class Cabriolet is promising an unparalleled and unmistakable G‑Class feeling for future drivers.”

While the latest G-Class is available with a fully-electric powertrain, the new G‑Class Cabriolet will be powered by a traditional V8 engine.

Expect power of at least 449 hp, all-wheel drive… and the ability to turn heads as you park up outside The Ritz.
