- Performance VW ID. Polo GTI also revealed
- Naming announcement secures the Polo’s future
- Car was previously known as ‘ID.2all’ concept
- Set for launch in 2026
- Previewed here in near-production form

The Polo name is here to stay, after Volkswagen confirmed its next electric supermini will be called the ID. Polo.
We’ve seen this car before.
Up until now it has been known as the ‘ID.2all’ and many suspected the compact hatch would be called the ID.2 (baby brother to the current ID.3) when it went on sale.

But VW has now cleared up the confusion and revealed how its compact EV will carry the iconic Polo name - and we’ll also be getting a performance VW ID. Polo GTI (pictured below).

Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, Head of the Brand Group Core and member of the Group Board of Management: “Our model names are firmly anchored in people’s minds. They stand for a strong brand and embody characteristics such as quality, timeless design and technologies for all. That’s why we’re moving our well-known names into the future. The ID. Polo is just the beginning.”

Volkswagen ID. Polo launch date
The VW ID. Polo will arrive officially at some point in 2026, with the hot VW ID. Polo GTI anticipated to accelerate into the market in 2027.
Both cars are previewed here in camouflaged form but are ‘near-production’, so the vehicles you’ll be actually able to lease won’t look too dissimilar.

VW ID. Polo price & specification
So far, we don’t have concrete information about what will be powering the ID. Polo or its starting price.
But it’s likely to get two battery options (a 38 kWh battery and larger 56 kWh unit) and a range spanning between 220 miles and 280 miles, depending on which model you choose.
Power is expected to peak at around 226 PS for the VW ID. Polo GTI while the regular ID. Polo is anticipated to reach around 180 PS.

That’ll make both models quick off the mark and the VW ID. Polo GTI is likely to blitz the petrol-powered VW Polo GTI when it comes to 0-62mph acceleration.
Price wise, the VW ID. Polo is likely to cost from around £22,000, which should make it an affordable option for lease customers.

VW ID. Polo rivals
The ID. Polo will go up against competitors like the Renault 5 E-Tech, MG4 EV, BYD Dolphin Surf, Vauxhall Corsa Electric, and Peugeot E-208.
The ID. Polo GTI, on the other hand, will look to out-muscle the likes of the Alpine A290, the MINI Cooper Electric and the Smart #1.
