Polestar 3 set new EV range record

  • Polestar 3 sets new Guinness World Record
  • Longest journey travelled by an electric SUV on a single charge
  • Distance of 581.3 miles
  • Still managed to coast to a charger at the end
  • Swipes the trophy from the Ford Mustang Mach-E

The Polestar 3 has just set a new Guinness World Record for ‘longest journey travelled by an electric SUV on a single charge’.

The precise car in question was a Polestar 3 Long Range Single Motor and the test was done on real roads (not a track) and in mixed weather conditions right here in the UK, starting near Norwich.

The Polestar managed to eke out a whopping 581.3 miles before the battery depleted - way beyond the car’s official range of 438 miles.

The car was piloted by a trio of ‘professional efficiency drivers’ (whatever they are…), called Sam Clarke, Kevin Booker and Richard Parker.

And Matt Galvin, Polestar UK Managing Director, reckons the feat is proof that EV drivers shouldn’t be so anxious about range.

He said: “While Kevin, Sam and Richard pushed the Polestar 3 to the boundaries of its range capability, it goes to show how battery range has improved exponentially over the past few years. For a large luxury SUV to go way beyond a London to Edinburgh distance is truly impressive.

“When this achievement is coupled together with real world independent tests such as Norway’s El Prix winter range test earlier in the year where the Polestar 3 Long Range Dual Motor won against 23 other electric vehicles, it goes to show: long distances are perfectly achievable with minimal fuss.

“Add to this rapid charging with up to 250kW allowing a 10-80% charge in 30 minutes, the adage that ‘EVs can’t go far’ has been very much consigned to the history books.”

The Polestar 3 achieved an efficiency of 19.5 kWh per 100 miles - the equivalent of 5.13 m/kWh.

The attempt took 22 hours and 57 minutes to complete, with the drivers swapping seats every three hours to maintain alertness.

The Polestar 3 didn’t even conk out when the battery eventually depleted; it managed to travel 8 miles with the ‘0% battery’ warning lights illuminated in order to find a charger.

Thus, the AA’s breakdown van which followed the Polestar 3 wasn’t actually needed.

Driver Kevin Booker said: “There’s always jeopardy, and our attempt could have been hampered by the adverse weather conditions and traffic we experienced – there was a lot of standing water during part of the day, meaning more resistance from the tyres and lower efficiency. But, finishing up on 0% at nearly one o’clock in the morning knowing we’d beaten previous records was a fantastic feeling!”

That previous record was held by the Ford Mustang Mach-E (Premium Extended Range RWD), which managed a jaunt of 569.64 miles in August last year.
