An icon returns: new Fiat Grande Panda 4x4

Now you’re talking - here’s a first look at a 4x4 version of the new Fiat Grande Panda.

The all-new Fiat Grande Panda arrived earlier this year as a replacement for the old Panda, and it did so with an electric or mild hybrid powertrain that drives the front wheels.

This new Grande Panda 4x4 concept, however, is all-wheel drive.

And it’s a reimagining of a compact, lightweight cult classic off-roader that first won admirers back in the 1980s (see above!).

James May famously drove one in the Colombia special of Amazon’s The Grand Tour.

Fiat says the new Grande Panda 4x4 is a ‘bold reimagining of an icon’ that’s built for ‘all-terrain adventure’.

The Italian manufacturer is, however, vague on what might be powering the new Panda 4x4, merely stating that it’ll boast an ‘electrified innovative rear axle’ which enables ‘impressive performance in urban settings and on more demanding terrain’.

A rejuvenated Panda 4x4 has big shoes to fill, with the original that launched in 1983 proving how lithe, pipsqueak off-roaders can out-perform hulking SUVs on the tough stuff.

The concept gets a dark red paint job, contrasting beige detailing, steel wheels, and ‘PANDA’ lettering on the side. The pics also reveal two lamps on the roof rack, in addition to those on the front.

A Fiat spokesperson tells us: “With this modern reinterpretation of the Panda 4x4, FIAT reaffirms its desire to blend heritage and innovation, responding to the needs of a changing mobility landscape without ever losing sight of the model’s authentic and deeply popular soul.”
