- New Citroen C5 Aircross unveiled
- Electric powertrain available for first time
- e-C5 Aircross EV gets 422-mile range
- Mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid engines also available
- Hits lease market second half of 2025
Here’s the grown-up new Citroen C5 Aircross - and the family-sized SUV is being handed a fully-electric powertrain for the first time.
The C5 Aircross sits in Citroen’s range between the C4 crossover and the more coupe-like C5 X.
And while it’s not a seven-seater, the C5 Aircross has been a faithful servant for countless families since its launch back in 2019.
Now the C5 Aircross is being treated to a glow-up for the launch of the second-generation model, which arrives properly later this year.
A style overhaul sees the C5 Aircross gaining chunking new looks as part of Citroen’s new design language, as well as the now-familiar, blacked-out, oval logo at the front.
And the other big news is that there will now be an electric Citroen e-C5 Aircross - which can be equipped with a 97 kWh battery that gives it a huge 422-mile maximum range (which just pips the extended range Peugeot E-5008).
The e-C5 Aircross will sit on the ‘STLA-M’ electric platform built by parent company Stellantis. It’s a platform shared with the likes of the Vauxhall Grandland, Peugeot E-3008 and the seven-seat Peugeot E-5008.
You’ve got two battery options; a 73kWh affair offering 210 hp and a range of 323 miles, or the larger 97 kWh unit which ups the range to 422 miles and the power to 230 hp.
A heat pump comes as standard on ‘Max’ models. Rapid charging at speeds up to 160 kW DC can take the energy in the battery from 20-80% in 30 minutes.
Away from the electric e-C5 Aircross, the ‘Hybrid 48V’ variant is a mild-hybrid that’s still able to travel very short distances using nothing but battery power. Here a 1.2-litre petrol engine is mated with a 0.9 kWh battery and electric motor to develop 136 hp.
The C5 Aircross Plug-In Hybrid, meanwhile, gets a range of up to 53 miles in EV mode - ‘a benchmark in its category for ease of use’, says Citroen - and which is up 33% compared to the PHEV C5 Aircross you can lease right now.
Citroen also reckons the comfy cabin of the new C5 Aircross is akin to the cozyness you’d find in your home lounge. The lower part of the dashboard is covered in a high-quality foam fabric that extends to the door panels and seats, creating a ‘homogenous and pleasant atmosphere, just like a real cocoon!’, the French firm enthuses.
You also get Citroen’s ‘Advanced Comfort’ seats and plush suspension for a ride quality that cossets the posterior.
The new Citroën C5 Aircross also features the largest central HD touchscreen ever offered by a Stellantis brand while wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is a given.
And because there’s no third row of seats, lease customers will also enjoy a massive 651-litre boot. See, we told you it was a good family car.
We’ll bring you full UK specs as and when they arrive. Besides the other Stellantis vehicles mentioned above, the new Citroen C5 Aircross will also compete with cars like the Kia Sportage, Volkswagen Tiguan and Nissan Qashqai.
