Hyundai Ioniq 5 N named ‘World Performance Car’

Here’s your ‘World Performance Car’ for 2024 - the fully-electric and completely bonkers Hyundai Ioniq 5 N.

The annual World Car Awards sees more than a 100 journalists from across the globe getting together to decide which cars ‘inspire automotive excellence, leadership and innovation’.

There are six categories: World Performance Car, World Car Design, World Luxury Car, World Urban Car, World Electric Vehicle and World Car of the Year.

The overall World Car of the Year gong - and the trophy for World Electric Car - went to the Kia EV9, an EV that also recently took home the main prize at the UK Car of the Year Awards. Kia is gonna need a bigger trophy cabinet.

You can lease the Kia EV9 with Select Car Leasing from £642 per month*.

But what we’re concerned about here is the Performance category - and the unhinged Hyundai left a lasting impression on judges.

Having been announced as sector winner at the New York International Auto Show, José Muñoz, President and Global COO of Hyundai Motor Company, said: “We dedicate this amazing award to our passionate customers who appreciate high-performance vehicles, and we pledge to continue to deliver vehicles that excite and inspire. We are thrilled to lead the charge in this new era of electric performance vehicles and are committed to continually challenging the limits of engineering possibilities for smart mobility.”

The Ioniq 5 N boasts power of up to 650 PS, a 0-62mph acceleration time of just 3.4 seconds, and aggressive styling compared with its regular, more sedate Ioniq 5 sibling.

But that’s just the half of it.

Everything about the Ioniq 5 N has been honed to put a massive, stupid grin on your face. There’s a dedicated ‘Drift’ mode that urges you to go sideways around a racetrack, an ‘N Pedal’ for effortless cornering, and an ‘N Torque Distribution’ mated to an electronic limited slip diff that means it’d be rude not to unleash your inner hooligan.

And, despite all of that, you still get a practical SUV with a 527-litre boot.

You can lease the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N with Select from £858 per month*.

Here’s how all of the winners at the World Car Awards shaped up:
