Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale - back from the dead

Alfa Romeo has revived what it calls ‘one of the most beautiful cars of all time’ - the simply gorgeous 33 Stradale.

Back in 1967, Alfa Romeo produced a road-going sportscar (below) based on Alfa’s Tipo 33 track racing weapon.

Only 18 specimens were custom built, for extremely discerning customers, and its stunning good looks quickly earned the 33 Stradale a place in lists of the most lusted-after cars ever.

Now, some five decades later, Alfa Romeo is bringing the 33 Stradale back from the dead and reinvigorated for the modern era.

It’s a model limited to just 33 vehicles - all ‘fuoriserie’, or custom-built, cars. They’ve also all already sold out, despite costing a jaw-dropping £2.6 million each.

The exterior is nothing short of a masterpiece, with butterfly doors, cutting-edge aerodynamics, and tailor-made quality everywhere you look.

The interior has been designed to look like an aeroplane cockpit, complete with a ‘minimalist’ design and a ‘purified’ approach to the controls.

An Alfa Romeo spokesperson says: “Just like in every Alfa Romeo, the steering wheel is the primary means of communication with the car; devoid of all the buttons it usually comes with, it gives you an experience of pure driving pleasure, courtesy of the prestigious aluminium shift paddles. As in an airplane cockpit, the controls are located at different levels, in the low centre console and on a higher plane in the central lining on the inside of the roof.”

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the 33 Stradale is the fact that you can choose either a traditional 3.0 litre V6 engine with power of more than 620 hp, OR you can opt for a fully-electric powertrain.

The battery-powered 33 Stradale has more power than its petrol sibling, at 750 hp, as well as a range in excess of 280 miles between charges.

You can expect both the electric and petrol 33 Stradale to accelerate from 0-62 mph in less than three seconds.

Meanwhile each car will also be fine-tuned by Alfa Romeo’s F1 driver Valtteri Bottas on the legendary Balocco track near Turin - built by Alfa in the 1960s to test new cars - ‘bringing F1 experience into everyday driving and ensuring the unmistakable handling of an Alfa Romeo’.

Jean-Philippe Imparato, CEO of the Alfa Romeo brand, adds: “With the new 33 Stradale, we wanted to create something that lived up to our past, to serve the brand and to make the Alfisti fandom proud. Such a result could only have been achieved thanks to the expertise, hard work and passion of our team, with the support of management who have the clear ambition to contribute to writing chapters in the brand's future, in full respect of its unique history. This is the brand's first ‘fuoriserie’ car since 1969, and I promise it won't be the last.”

If you can’t stretch to a 33 Stradale - and let’s be honest, few of us can - then take a look at some other fine Alfas to lease.
