New Skoda Kodiaq gets plug-in hybrid power

Skoda is preparing to launch a brand new Kodiaq SUV - which gains a plug-in hybrid powertrain and even more interior space.

The Kodiaq is Skoda’s large, full fat SUV, sitting above the more compact Karoq and Kamiq crossovers. As an affordable seven-seater, it’s tough to beat as a lease option.

Now Skoda says a second-generation model will go into production next year.

And not only will it feature a fresh ‘powerful appearance’ and more room for the family, leasing customers will also enjoy the option of a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain.

That plug-in hybrid engine is important, because the Kodiaq is also competing with PHEV version of the Hyundai Sante Fe and the Kia Sorento.

The plug-in hybrid, front-wheel drive Kodiaq - called the ‘Kodiaq iV’ - will have power of 204 hp and an all-electric range of up to 62 miles.

It can support 50 kW DC fast-charging. And, despite the large battery, the Kodiaq iV will still get 754 litres of luggage space. You get a whopping 910 litres of boot room with the regular five-seat Kodiaq, or 340 litres behind the third row of seats in the seven-seater.

Elsewhere in the range of engines, a 1.5 petrol TSI unit will enjoy mild-hybrid tech, and the most powerful petrol and diesel engines (up to 204 hp) are all-wheel drive as standard. Helpfully, all engines are mated to an automatic DSG transmission.

Skoda has also gifted the Kodiaq a new suit.

The exterior is ‘more powerful and solid’, according to the Czech firm, and there are squared-off wheel arches and new lettering at the back. TOP LED Matrix headlights and front grille with horizontal light strip make their debuts.

The Kodiaq has grown in size, increasing in length by six centimetres, which translates to more interior space and head room for passengers, as well as letting you fit more junk in the trunk.

Inside the cabin, the infotainment display is ‘free-standing’, with a 13-inch screen. The gear selector lever is now mounted on the steering column, which ‘lends the centre console a very clean and tidy look’, says Skoda

Wireless phone charging is a useful addition, too, while a head-up display is an optional extra.

The all-new Kodiaq is also proud of its eco credentials.

A Skoda spokesperson explains: “All textiles used for the seat upholstery, the carpets in the cabin and the luggage compartment as well as the headliner are made of 100 percent recycled polyester or, in the case of the Design Selection Lounge, a combination of recycled yarns with 40 percent natural wool. The leather featured in the ecoSuite Design Selection is tanned in an environmentally friendly way using residues from coffee bean processing.”

Even the umbrella and ice scraper - two classic Skoda features - are made from sustainable materials.

The new Kodiaq will also continue to be exceptionally safe. New safety assistance systems include Turn Assist (which helps you avoid prangs when turning at junctions) and Remote Park Assist (which lets you park the car via a dedicated app), while the Side and Travel Assists now come with extended functionality thanks to more powerful radars in the bumpers.

The ‘Sportline’ trim will be the top-rung model, and comes fully-loaded with unique styling inside and out, the TOP LED Matrix headlights mentioned above, an electric tailgate, 19-inch alloys, Dynamic Chassis Control, and sports seats.

There’s no word yet on price, but we’ll bring you those details as they arrive.

In the meantime, you can lease the current Skoda Kodiaq with Select Car Leasing from £539 per month*.
