Used car leasing: Everything you need to know!

Here’s a simple way for drivers to swerve the cost of living crisis - and it might not be a method you’ve considered before.

At Select Car Leasing, we now offer used cars to lease.

That goes for both personal and business customers, the latter of which might be looking for a super-affordable company car where you can make lots of tax savings.

These cars are in stock now, so you don’t have to wait weeks for delivery.

And industry experts reckon second-hand, used car leasing is on course to be a £5 billion industry in Europe by 2030 as it truly takes off. As respected business mag Forbes put it while chatting about used car leasing in a recent article: "Honestly, what’s not to like?"

Our sentiments exactly!

So, what’s the deal? Where do the cars come from? Are they going to be reliable? And what sort of savings can you make?

Read on to find out:

How ‘used’ is used?

These used cars are very much ‘nearly new’, as opposed to having been flogged to death in a past life.

We source them from our trusted vehicle funders. And the cars are what’s known as ‘re-lease’ vehicles - ie, ones that have already enjoyed one cycle of leasing, and now they’re going to a new customer.

The thing to remember here is that by their very nature, a re-lease used car will have been well looked after. It’s a stipulation of any lease agreement that the car is maintained and serviced according to strict manufacturer’s guidelines.

Past owners will also have had to abide by the ‘fair wear and tear’ guidelines, as stipulated by the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA).

Let’s be honest - you often don’t have that sort of certainty when you’re looking at purchasing other used vehicles, so there’s peace of mind to be had.

How old are the used cars available for lease?

You’re looking at cars that are around two or three years old, and typically have around 20,000 to 25,000 miles on the clock.

Take a look at the images, and you’ll see they all have blemish-free paintwork and remarkably-clean interiors.

As we pointed out earlier, these cars have had to be kept neat and tidy by virtue of how lease agreements work.

What are the best used car leasing deals?

Well, ‘best’ depends on what you’re looking for and what your budget is.

There are plenty of deals that come in at less than £200 per month, with a relatively low initial payment, too. That’s handy for folks who have tight family budgets right now.

And ‘value for money’ is the key phrase here - as you could end up behind the wheel of a car you just wouldn’t be able to afford if you were leasing brand new.

Take a look at the SEAT Leon, for example.

A Leon in desirable, range-topping ‘FR’ trim would cost around £270 to lease brand new with Select.

Yet we have (well, we did at the time of writing…) a used, three-year-old SEAT Leon FR priced from around £182 per month.

Whatever way you look at it, that’s a huge saving. And that’s for a 10,000-mile annual allowance over 36 months, with a £1,600 initial payment.

Just like with any other lease, you can also add an optional ‘Maintenance’ package to your deal, too. With the SEAT, above, it works out at an extra £60 a month, but means you never have to worry about servicing bills.

Our used cars aren’t just limited to the most affordable models, either.

You’ll find executive saloons, sporty hot hatches, luxury SUVs, and even the hottest ‘M’ models from BMW.

A used Range Rover Evoque for £312 per month isn’t to be sniffed at, and the used hybrid Volvo XC40 Recharge looks a steal at £353 per month.

Those cars might have been snapped-up by the time you read this, so keep checking our used car lease deals pages for the most up-to-date offers.

Used car leasing - don’t miss the vehicle you want

As we’ve pointed out above, our used car stock changes all the time.

That’s not a marketing spiel, it’s the genuine truth, and because specific models fly out the door in rapid-quick succession, you’re best to act fast if you see something you like.

Mercedes-Benz leasing

As you might already be aware, Mercedes-Benz has actually taken a step back from the leasing industry as we know it. And, right now, we're currently only able to place customers in the small number of vehicles from that manufacturer which are still available.

That might be slightly frustrating, particularly if you already lease a Mercedes-Benz and want to step back inside one when you're current lease agreement ends.

But there is an answer. And that's used vehicle leasing.

We're able to offer used leases on some of the most popular cars from the Mercedes-Benz stable, including the ever-desirable A-Class and the executive E-Class Coupe (again, at the time of writing).

If you love that particular brand and want to continue enjoy its cars, have a look at some of the nearly new cars we've got available.

Anything else you need to know about used car leasing?

Your road tax is paid for and used cars also come with breakdown cover included, which is something less to worry about.

Just like with a new car lease, you’ll need to abide by annual mileage limitations and make sure the car is well maintained and looked-after for the duration of your contract.
