Kia launches new EV5 - as well as two other concepts!

You wait ages for a new Kia… and then THREE come along at once.

Yep, Kia has lifted the lid on a trio of fresh electric models.

One of them, the Kia EV5, is already going into production and will sit in the firm’s line-up alongside the larger EV6 and EV9.

The other two - the EV3 SUV and EV4 Saloon - are both concepts, for now at least, and unveiled as part of the inaugural ‘Kia EV Day’.

So, let’s start with the concrete stuff first - the Kia EV5, which will arrive in 2025.

Kia EV5

This fully-electric SUV has, according to the Korean manufacturer, been ‘designed and engineered to meet the needs and desires of modern individuals with families’.

It’s built on Kia’s own ‘E-GMP’ platform, which is shared with the Kia EV6, the Kia EV9, and also the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6.

And the Kia EV5 is said to take inspiration from its bigger EV9 brother when it comes to the ‘home lounge’ feel of the cabin, which comes complete with a 12.3-inch cluster and 12.3-inch infotainment system.

There will, eventually, be standard, long-range, and long-range AWD versions of the EV5.

You’re looking at power of around 215 hp as well as maximum range of up to 440 miles, depending on which version you lease.

Meanwhile fast-charging capabilities will see the battery charged from 30 to 80 per cent capacity in just 27 minutes.

And the good news is that a heat pump will be fitted as standard.

A Kia spokesperson explains: “The EV5 battery has been engineered to function effectively throughout all four seasons, even in extreme hot and cold weather. An advanced heat pump system, an already popular feature of the EV6, has been incorporated into the EV5 to manage the battery’s temperature, ensuring consistent performance regardless of external conditions.”

What’s more, just like with the EV6, there will also be a hot GT version, that’ll ramp-up the power and performance to offer an ‘engaging driving experience’.

The EV5 will also feature Kia’s ‘Highway Driving Assist 2’ semi-autonomous system, which helps drivers maintain distance, stay centred in the lane, change lanes, and adjust lateral positioning. It’ll also park itself at the touch of a button ‘without the need for driver intervention’.

Kia EV3 Concept

Kia reckons it has taken everything it learned with its flagship EV9 and boiled it down into a more compact package.

It’s a hatchback-SUV crossover, complete with a sloping roofline, squared wheel arches, and wrap-around windscreen.

Meanwhile the relaxing, Ikea-like cabin is supposed to ‘offer up the possibility of boundless opportunities on every journey’, according to Kia.

Kia EV4 Concept

While the EV3 Concept is very much a crossover, the EV4 Concept looks like being more of a saloon to compete with the Tesla Model 3.

Kia, however, is quick to point out that it’s ‘not just another saloon, but an entirely new type of EV saloon that stands as a symbol of innovation’.

There’s a whiff of SUV about it, which makes it a sort of half-way house between a Tesla Model Y and a Tesla Model 3.

It’s certainly a looker, with a wide, imposing stance and distinctive headlight set-up.

The interior of both the EV3 and the EV4 is peak retro chic, and wouldn’t have looked amiss in the 1970s.

We’ll bring you more news about the Kia EV5 as and when it gets announced.

And in the meantime, the most affordable fully-electric Kia to lease is the brilliant Kia Niro EV, with prices starting from £295 per month*.
