Nissan Qashqai e-Power hybrid: Everything you need to know

Want the joy of driving an electric vehicle without ever having to worry about charging? Then you need to lease the Nissan Qashqai e-Power.

The Qashqai, built right here in the UK, has been a fixture of British roads since way back in 2007.

And the so-called ‘King of the Crossovers’ has well and truly moved with the times in recent months.

While the regular Qashqai is powered by a traditional 1.3-litre petrol engine supported by mild-hybrid tech, the Qashqai e-Power is something else entirely - being a self-charging hybrid that ramps-up the desirability.

Right now Select Car Leasing has a special offer, discounted rate for the Qashqai e-Power, with prices starting from just £297 per month*.

Why should you lease one? Read on to find out:

How does the e-Power engine work?

This is the clever bit.

With other ‘parallel’ hybrid vehicles, the petrol engine and the electric motor work in unison together to drive the wheels. You might get short periods of propulsion from the electric motor, before the combustion engine kicks-in to take over.

The Nissan Qashqai e-Power isn’t like that.

Instead, a 1.5 litre petrol engine is there purely to generate power, which is fed to a battery that drives an electric motor. It’s the electric motor that propels the Qashqai e-Power 100 per cent of the time.

It’s a unique set-up that makes the e-Power stand out from the pack.

And there’s no need to ever reach for the charging cables, as the petrol engine ensures there’s always energy in the system.

What are the benefits of the Nissan Qashqai e-Power engine?

The big one is that the car drives and feels like you’re behind the wheel of an electric vehicle (EV).

Why is that a good thing?

Well, you get the instant, linear, smooth acceleration that’s often associated with EVs, as well as a refined and quiet drive quality.

Just like with a proper, fully-electric car, the Qashqai e-Power also has ‘one-pedal’ driving capabilities. What that means is that when you lift your right foot, regenerative braking slows you down without you having to dab the brake pedal.

As Nissan points out, that’s perfect for stop-start urban motoring and could really take the hassle out of your morning commute.

Is the Nissan Qashqai e-Power economical?

Nissan states a combined miles per gallon figure of 53 mpg, which is decent indeed for a fairly large family SUV. It’s slightly more fuel efficient than the equivalent Kia Sportage hybrid, too.

You don’t have to sacrifice performance for prudence, either.

The Qashqai e-Power has 190 PS on tap that results in a 0-62mph acceleration time of just 7.9 seconds.

One thing to remember, though, is that there’s no real electric-only range - that’s something reserved for plug-in hybrids with larger batteries.

What trim levels are available with the Nissan Qashqai e-Power?

There are five in total - running from the entry-level Acenta Premium to the all-singing, all-dancing Kuro Edition.

The good news here is that all Nissan Qashqai e-Power models are extremely well-specced as standard.

You can expect a raft of sophisticated safety technology, including Intelligent Driver Alertness, Intelligent Rear Automatic Braking, Intelligent Blind Spot Intervention, Intelligent front emergency braking with pedestrian, cyclist recognition and junction assist, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, Intelligent Lane Intervention, and Intelligent Cruise Control.

What you really need to know is that the most affordable trim to lease here at Select Car Leasing right now is the second-rung ‘N-Connecta’. That unlocks goodies like a 12.3-inch screen, 360-degree camera with ‘moving object detection’, ambient lighting, front and rear parking sensors, and privacy glass. Nice.

Is the Nissan Qashqai e-Power practical?

If you’re part of a busy family that’s always on the move, then a Nissan Qashqai e-Power lease might be just the job.

Even with the extra room needed to store the e-Power’s battery, there’s no detriment to the luggage capacity. At 504 litres, it’s got the same sized boot as the traditionally-powered Qashqai and should be ample for most customers, though some rivals can accommodate more junk in the trunk.

We ran the rule over the hybrid Qashqai earlier this year - and our reviewer was suitably impressed.

He summed-up: “The extra performance and refinement that e-Power brings make it the very best version of the Qashqai so far.”
