MG3 reinvented as rapid urban hybrid

The affordable MG3 hatchback has undergone a radical transformation, growing in size while gaining a powerful new self-charging hybrid powertrain.

The new and improved MG3 is being shown off at the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland this week ahead of a proper launch later this year.

While the current MG3 makes do with a traditional 1.5-litre petrol engine chucking out power of 106 PS, the new one ups the ante considerably.

Here a 1.5-litre engine is married to a 1.83 kWh battery and 100 kWh electric motor to produce a combined power output of 194 PS.

The hybrid set-up powers itself so never needs to be plugged in and even offers full electric-only running for as long as charge allows.

It’s enough oomph to propel the MG3 from 0-62mph in just 8.0 seconds - which MG reckons makes it ‘the fastest accelerating hybrid B-segment model in the class’.

You’re looking here at rivals like the hybrid Renault Clio E-Tech, the Toyota Yaris hybrid, and the Mazda2 hybrid, all of which have less power and take longer to reach 62 mph from a standing start than the MG.

Despite the MG3’s get-up-and-go, it’ll also still return around 64 miles to the gallon, which makes it efficient and cheap to run, too.

Size wise, the new MG3 will be both longer and wider than the outgoing model, while MG’s engineers and China and Europe have worked hard to improve the suspension, as they seek to find the perfect balance between sportiness and comfort.

Two trim levels will be up for grabs here in the UK - the entry-level SE and range-topping Trophy.

As is par for the course with an MG lease, even the cheapest models come loaded with kit as standard.

The SE MG3 gets a 7-inch digital cockpit, a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, sat nav, rear parking sensors, and a rear-view camera.

The Trophy grade adds extras such as leather-style upholstery, keyless entry, heated front seats and steering wheel, and a 360-degree camera.

You can also expect a wealth of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), including adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and forward collision warning.
