If you’d always assumed Smart meant ‘small’, you might be shocked by the manufacturer’s latest effort - the rugged Concept #5.
Yep, the days of Smart being the purveyors of ultra-compact city cars appears to be long gone.
We’ve currently got the Smart #1 crossover and the larger Smart #3 SUV-coupe available to lease, both of which are bigger than most other Smarts that have gone before them.
And now we’re hoping that this Concept #5 also makes the jump from drawing board to road, as it marks a very new direction for the Mercedes-Benz and Geely-owned firm.
The Smart #5 is fully electric and features state-of-the-art 800-volt technology - the same as you get in the new Porsche Taycan - as well as a 100 kWh battery.
That gives ir a range of at least 341 miles while the battery can go from 10-80% full in just 15 minutes.
A boxy, outdoorsy stance gives the Concept #5 a sense of adventure. Squint and you can see a bit of Land Rover Defender in it. There are protective skid plates and even a winch so you can get your kicks in the great outdoors.
Meanwhile a plush cabin features wide twin screens, voice control, and artificial intelligence integration that allows you to ‘engage the virtual in-car assistant in entertaining conversations’, which should at least be fun for the kids.
Dirk Adelmann, CEO of Smart Europe, said: “For more than a quarter of a century, Smart has made a significant impact by pioneering models and mobility solutions for the urban space and beyond. The smart Concept #5 is the most unexpected and versatile car that our brand has ever created. With this vehicle, we leave all boundaries behind and open up a new segment for customers in Europe and worldwide.”
