New Smart city car teased

  • New Smart #2 teased
  • Smart going back to its roots with dinky city car
  • Based on the old ‘Fortwo’ model
  • All-electric two-seater
  • Set to make debut late 2026

Smart is returning to its roots with the launch of a two-seat city car - the Smart #2.

When Smart cars first took the UK by storm in the early Noughties, it did so with the pint-sized, two-seat Smart City-Coupe, which later morphed into the ‘Fortwo’.

We also saw an electric version - the Smart EQ Fortwo Coupe (below) - introduced in 2020.

Since Smart was reinvented a couple of years ago (under the new Geely-Mercedes ownership), we’ve been treated to much larger offerings, from the Smart #1 compact crossover to the new Smart #5, a family-sized SUV.

Now, though, Smart is going back to what made it famous in the first place with the introduction of the pipsqueak Smart #2.

It’s a dinky, two-seat EV that’s set to make its debut late in 2026.

It’s being built to meet the ‘demands of customers in urban areas’, says Smart, and leans on the ‘rich heritage of the iconic Fortwo’.

Dirk Adelmann, CEO smart Europe, said: “The confirmation of our ‘project: two’ and the upcoming launch of the smart #2 marks a milestone moment for the smart brand on a global scale. The smart #2 will shape a new era of individual urban automobility, especially in classic smart cities like Rome, London or Paris.”

There’s no word yet on powertrains, spec or price - and we don’t know if the Smart #2 will be available as a soft top Cabrio.

When it does arrive, the Smart #2 could compete with other affordable electric city cars like the Citroen AMI, Dacia Spring, and Leapmotor T03 - but will likely attract a more premium price tag than those rivals.
