Peugeot reinvents the steering wheel with new Polygon

  • New Peugeot Polygon revealed
  • Concept car that showcases future tech
  • Hypersquare steering wheel could be a Peugeot staple from 2027
  • Gull-wing doors
  • Could hint at the next Peugeot E-208

Peugeot has unveiled an astonishing new concept that previews a future E-208 - and comes with a square steering wheel and dramatic gullwing doors.

The Peugeot Polygon is a compact supermini that’s less than 4 metres in length and shows what the successor to the firm’s E-208 might look like.

Gullwing doors, bucket seats that look like they’re made from Lego, and a new interpretation of Peugeot’s ‘Three Claw’ light signature immediately catch the eye.

What’s even more striking is the Polygon’s ‘Hypersquare’ steering wheel, which is fully rectangular and comes with aviation-inspired Steer-by-Wire technology.

Peugeot says the Hypersquare isn’t just blue sky thinking - it could be introduced on genuine production models from 2027 onwards.

Here’s everything you need to know.

What is the Peugeot Polygon?

The Polygon is a striking, fully-electric concept vehicle that Peugeot says is a ‘dynamic proving ground, testing and showcasing numerous innovations that Peugeot will introduce from 2027 onwards’.

At around 4 metres in length, it’s roughly the same size as the existing Peugeot E-208 and may well hint at what an evolution of the E-208 might look like.

There’s no detail of range or battery size yet, but it’s likely to sit on the incoming ‘STLA Small platform’ from parent company Stellantis that could also underpin the next Vauxhall Corsa Electric.

The Polygon’s gull-wing doors make it look like a mini Tesla Model X (or futuristic DMC DeLorean) while the interior is free from displays, with information instead beamed onto the windscreen via a head-up display.

Deep bucket seats look like they’re made from Lego bricks (they’re actually crafted from a single-piece moulded foam) and create bizarre angles in the cabin.

Personalisation is the name of the game with the Polygon, with Peugeot promising all manner of customised models, from ‘Urban’ to ‘Explorer’, the latter of which gets an elevated stance and protective cladding on the exterior.

You can also swap out the seat foam for a different colour in a matter of minutes, too.

Speaking of materials, the Polygon is built with sustainability in mind and comes with an abundance of recycled materials. Even the lacquer used for the paint contains components recycled from end-of-life tyres.

What is the Peugeot Polygon Hypersquare?

The Hypersquare is a rectangular new steering wheel that could well find its way to proper production vehicles.

A company spokesperson tells us: “For more than a century, motorists have driven using the traditional circular steering wheel. Today, with Hypersquare, Peugeot is breaking the mould and reimagining the wheel entirely.”

It’s paired with steer-by-wire tech that replaces the mechanical link between the steering and front wheels with electronics.

Why is that a good thing?

Because it can adjust the steering ratio (ie, how much you need to turn the steering wheel) according to your speed, making it easy to park (you’ll need to turn the steering wheel less) when trundling along, or giving more precision and responsiveness when at pace.

Steer-by-wire isn’t a particularly new thing - you’ll find it in the incoming new Lexus RZ which is due to arrive in 2026. The Lexus also unlocks the option of a squared-off yolk steering wheel.

Peugeot says the tech is ‘proven in the aerospace industry’ and will be available on a production vehicle from 2027.

The Hypersquare itself has four circular ‘pods’ at each corner which give access to the car’s key functions.

Is the Peugeot Polygon the first car to showcase a square steering wheel?

Nope - we’ve seen several production models with rectangular steering wheels down the years, though mostly confined to high-end supercars.

Those models include the Aston Martin Valkyrie and Lotus Evija, while the Tesla Model S that you can still buy in the States also enjoys a rectangular yoke instead of a traditional wheel.
