New Smart #2 - first look!

  • New Smart #2 revealed
  • Ultra-compact EV
  • Two seats, two doors, rear-wheel drive
  • Successor to the old Smart fortwo
  • Will debut properly in late 2026

You’ll never struggle for a parking spot again - as Smart prepares to launch its pipsqueak new #2 city hatchback!

Rewind the clock back 30 years, and Smart was busy carving itself a new niche by offering ultra-compact urban hatchbacks that you could almost fit in your back pocket.

Smart - now jointly owned by Mercedes-Benz and Geely - pivoted a couple of years back to offer premium crossovers and SUVs, including the impressive new Smart #5.

But the brand is now returning to its roots with this - the two-seat, two-door, rear-wheel drive Smart #2.

As you can see from its inimitable shape, the #2 is the successor to the similarly-sized (and now discontinued) Smart fortwo.

Here’s everything we know so far.

What is the Smart #2?

The Smart #2 is a fully-electric new city car that ‘will set new benchmarks for the city-car segment that Smart defined almost thirty years ago’, the firm tells us.

It’ll boast the firm’s signature ‘wheels-at-the-corners’ stance and it’s seen here wearing the exterior body of the old Smart fortwo as a sort of industry disguise.

However, Smart says the actual car will have a fully redesigned interior and exterior and will launch with a ‘fresh identity’.

So, you can expect it to have a slightly different silhouette to the vehicle you can see here.

What range will the Smart #2 have?

The #2 sits on Smart’s Electric Compact Architecture (ECA), which also underpins the Smart #1 and Smart #3.

It gets 400-volt tech that means rapid charging and decent amounts of range - with the Smart #1 capable of travelling up to 273 miles between charges.

The Smart #2 will be less capable than its larger sibling and will have a smaller battery pack.

While we’ve no official word yet on how far the Smart #2 will be able to travel between trips to the plug, the (ahem) smart money says it’ll need to have a range of around 200 miles to appeal to urban-dwellers - and to provide competition to cars like the Fiat 500e and the Renault Twingo (below).

When will the Smart #2 be available in the UK?

The Smart #2 is currently undergoing testing in China where the firm’s boffins are refining the ride quality, testing structural strength, and checking battery performance.

It’ll then have its world premiere late in 2026, with production models likely to arrive in 2027.
