  • New Toyota GR GT revealed
  • Flagship sports car will arrive in 2027
  • Power of 641bhp
  • Top speed ‘in excess of’ 199mph
  • 4.0-litre V8 with mild hybrid tech
  • Inspired by Toyota 2000GT of the 1960s and recent Lexus LFA
  • New electric Lexus LFA also revealed

Who said V8s were dead? This is the muscular new Toyota GR GT - a stonking new ‘everyday’ supercar that’s going to roar onto forecourts in 2027.

The road-legal two-seater is the new flagship sports car of Toyota’s performance Gazoo Racing division.

It’s low-slung, gets an all-aluminium body frame for a light weight (at 1,750kg ‘or lower’) and will also form the basis of a GR GT3 racecar (below).

Perhaps most importantly, it’s powered by a 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 that develops 641bhp and will accelerate the GR GT to speeds ‘in excess’ of 199mph.

Here’s everything you need to know:

What is the Toyota GR GT?

The GR GT is a new V8 supercar that Toyota says has been built with ‘everyday use’ in mind, from circuit racing to the school run.

It’ll arrive in the UK in 2027.

And the GR GT also rides on the coattails of some very important cars from years gone by.

One touchstone for engineers was the Toyota 2000GT from the 1960s (below), a limited-edition beauty widely thought to be Japan’s first supercar and which was, at the time, compared favourably to the Porsche 911.

Toyota’s people in white coats have also drawn inspiration from the Lexus LFA (Lexus is owned by Toyota), a sumptuous supercar that disappeared in 2012 but which is also about to make a glorious comeback (more of that below).

In fact, the engineers who worked on the new GR GT also worked on the Lexus LFA and have passed on ‘the secret sauce of car-making’ to the next generation of designers, says Toyota.

Style-wise, the Toyota GR GT is a riot of sleek yet aggressive aero while the elongated bonnet screams ‘muscle car’.

A quad exhaust system dominates the rear and has been built to provide an ‘enjoyable sound at all times, from engine start to acceleration and deceleration’, according to Toyota.

It’s going to sound epic, isn’t it?

What engine is powering the Toyota GR GT?

The Toyota GR GT is a hybrid powered by a 4.0-litre V8 twin-turbo engine that’s allied to a single electric motor.

It’s a front-engine, rear-wheel drive affair that develops 641bhp and 850Nm of torque - similar to the recent Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S but less oomph than the current Porsche 911 Turbo S.

We don’t yet know how fast the GR GT will accelerate from 0-62mph, but Toyota says we can expect a top speed in excess of 199mph.

A rear transaxle integrates a new eight-speed automatic transmission, which uses a wet-start clutch in place of a torque converter, and a mechanical limited-slip differential.

The electric motor-generator (the mild hybrid bit) beefs up the torque response when you slam your foot to the floor or when changing gears.

There’s a 45:55 front-to-rear weight distribution which should translate to some fruity handling dynamics while the all-aluminium body frame, and specially-honed chassis, ‘prioritises ease of at-the-limit handling’, Toyota tells us.

The suspension set-up is a double-wishbone system, front and rear, with forged aluminium arms.

Meanwhile, there are enormous Brembo carbon brake discs at the front and back and you can adjust the stopping dynamics via the GR GT’s Vehicle Stability Control system.

What is the interior of the Toyota GR GT like?

Toyota says the GR GT’s cabin prioritises function over form.

It’s an uncluttered look, with chunky toggles and dials dominating the cockpit and driving-related switches placed near the steering wheel.

A Toyota spokesperson adds: “For ease of visual recognition, even during circuit driving, special attention was paid to the gauges, with the width, height and position of information displays, such as the shift-up and gear selection indicators, determined through a process of trial and error.”

The interior still looks enticing enough, with an Alcantara-clad dash and bright orange bucket seats.

What about the Lexus LFA - is it making a comeback?

Before it drove off into the sunset in 2012, the Lexus LFA was an ultra-rare, V10-engined supercar lauded as one of the best-sounding road cars in history.

After a hiatus of almost 15 years, the LFA is now set to return… as an EV.

The new Lexus LFA Concept was revealed at the same time as the Toyota GR GT and sees Lexus ‘taking on the challenge of shaping the future of car-making’.

It’s a car that ‘shares the aspirations behind the GR GT and GR GT3’, says Lexus, and gets a futuristic steering wheel that’s ‘been designed for sports car use, eliminating the need for changing the hand grip as you turn’.

We don’t yet know what power or pace the next-gen Lexus LFA will get, but it’s another beauty that’ll also likely arrive in 2027.
