Cut-price new Tesla Model Y Standard announced for UK!

  • New Tesla Model Y Standard coming to UK
  • Replaces current entry-level Standard Range RWD Model Y
  • Priced from £41,990
  • £3k cheaper than current Standard RWD
  • Reduced spec level to reflect price
  • Follows the Model Y Standard’s launch in the US

Good news if you’re looking to lease the electric Tesla Model Y - because a cheaper new ‘Standard’ version has just been launched in the UK.

Having already been launched across The Pond in America, the new Tesla Model Y Standard will act as the new entry-level in the range here in Blighty.

It replaces the outgoing Standard Range RWD Model Y.

And the good news here is that the latest ‘Standard’ costs £41,990 - which shaves a solid £3,000 off the asking price compared with the Standard Range RWD (which costs £44,990) being shunted out of the line-up.

Here’s the lowdown, with the bargain new Model Y available to lease imminently:

What’s the range of the new Tesla Model Y Standard?

The good news continues here, as the new Tesla Model Y Standard actually has a slightly larger range than before (you can read our review of that Tesla Model Y here).

You get 314 miles between charges - compared with the 311 miles offered by the RWD Model Y that previously acted as the cheapest variant.

Rapid charging at 175 kW DC can put 162 miles worth of juice back in the tank in just 15 minutes.

And, of course, when you lease a Tesla you get access to the firm’s extensive network of ‘Supercharger’ stations - many of which can only be used by Tesla customers.

How fast is the Tesla Model Y Standard?

Bad news for speed merchants - the new Tesla Model Y Standard is actually slower to accelerate compared with the previous entry-level car.

The outgoing Standard Range RWD Model Y could sprint from 0-60mph in brisk 5.6 seconds.

The latest Model Y Standard takes 6.9 seconds to reach 60mph from a standstill.

Still, it’s likely fast enough for most customers and that dialled-down speed will help you conserve range.

What equipment do you get with the Tesla Model Y Standard?

The Tesla Model Y Standard has been built to help you save money.

So, there are a few compromises when it comes to the list of equipment fitted as standard.

The most obvious changes are to how the Model Y Standard looks. The eye-catching, width-spanning lightbar (that makes the latest Model Y look a bit like a Cybertruck) has been removed while the front and rear bumpers have been restyled.

There’s no secondary screen for passengers in the rear of the cabin and a black headliner is in place where a panoramic glass roof once stood. The seats are clad in vegan leather upholstery with cost-saving black fabric inserts.

The seats are heated (no longer ventilated) in the front while there’s no heat seating in the rear.

The shock absorbers have also been downgraded for a less fancy suspension system while the number of speakers in the cabin is also reduced.

But, having said all of that, the Model Y Standard still boasts enviable levels of kit.

There are 19-inch alloys, heated seats in the front, a large 15.4-inch touchscreen, and you get all of the usual Tesla software, including Basic Autopilot (which includes traffic aware cruise control), Dog Mode and Sentry Mode.

Will the Tesla Model 3 Standard be launched in the UK?

So, we've discussed the Tesla Model Y Standard, above, but what about the Tesla Model 3?

Well, a cheaper Tesla Model 3 Standard has also just been launched in Europe... but hasn't materialised just yet in the UK.

However, we'd be surprised if we didn't ultimately see a cheaper version of the Model 3 arrive on these shores in due course. Watch this space for announcements on that front.
