- New VW cockpit revealed
- Will debut in the incoming ID. Polo
- Physical buttons and toggles galore
- Flick a switch and you get the speedo and digital clock from the original Golf

Dig out your shell suit and grab your boom box - because Volkswagen is taking us back to the 80s with its new generation of cabin cockpit.
The German firm says it has listened to customer feedback when developing its latest tech.
That means there’s an abundance of physical knobs and toggles (rather than having to scroll through multiple infotainment screen menus) while there’s also a liberal use of recycled materials.
And while the digital architecture is thoroughly modern, there’s a cheeky nod to the past.

A VW spokesperson tells us: “The charm of the 1980s is now present in the vehicle thanks to the retro display: with a single button press, the digital instrument displays transform into screen views reminiscent of the first Golf."

A first-look at the interior of the VW ID. Polo
The new set-up will first be seen in the incoming VW ID. Polo (below), which is set to arrive in the middle of 2026.

These first-look pics show how you get an old skool speedo and Casio-esque digital clock.
Meanwhile the classic rev counter has been repurposed to display how much charge you’ve got left in your battery.

Volkswagen Chief Designer Andreas Mindt adds: “We have created an interior that feels like a friend from the very first contact. Clear physical buttons provide stability and trust, warm materials make it appealing, and charming details such as the new retro views of the instruments show the typical Volkswagen wink.”

The screens themselves measure 13-inch for the central infotainment touchscreen and 10.25-inches for the digital cockpit behind the steering wheel.
The multi-function steering wheel is also completely new and features plenty of physical buttons.
