Volkswagen Golf Frequently Asked Questions
The Volkswagen Golf is a familiar name even to those with no interest in cars. It’s been around for decades, and has been a favourite on British roads the whole time. So if you’re after something a bit different, then a Golf may not be for you. But to overlook it is to miss the reason why it’s so popular: it’s really, really good. With a premium-level interior but without the premium price, it’s comfortable, solid to drive and has a range of efficient engines. It comes as a hatchback or as an estate, for extra practicality.
The Golf tends to be more expensive to buy than some of its rivals, but because it’s so well sought-after, that doesn’t mean it’s expensive to lease too. In fact, it can be more affordable each month than some far less premium-feeling competition. Even so, because of Select Car Leasing’s market-leading links to the automotive industry, we can offer some of the most competitive leasing deals and special offers in the country. The Golf is one of motoring’s archetypal all-rounders. It’s not too pricey, but doesn’t feel cheap. It’s spacious but not too big. It’s good to drive, but not uncomfortable. With a wide range of both engines and trims, it’s a car that can be all things to most people, from those looking for an around-town runabout, to those needing to haul a family. With the performance GTI, GTD and R models, it’s one of the best hot hatches around, and with its plug-in hybrid models it can also run on electric-only power for up to 44 miles per battery charge.
The Volkswagen Golf was reviewed and tested by independent safety organisation Euro NCAP in 2019 and scored the maximum five stars, with an impressive 95% mark for adult occupant safety. All models get automatic emergency braking as well as adaptive cruise control, to help keep you a set distance from the car in front. It also includes a system called Car2X, which broadcasts hazard warnings to nearby, similarly equipped cars. Practicality is very solid, with plenty of room for even tall adults in the back seats, and a reasonable, if not quite massive boot. Of course, if you do need more boot space, then check out the much roomier Golf Estate.
Deep breath here, because there are a lot of trim choices on the Golf, but all are well-equipped. Starting at the most affordable, the Life has 16-inch alloy wheels and LED lights and a digital dashboard in place of analogue dials. You get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for smartphone connectivity, too. The trims then rise through Active and Style, which add extra features, to the sport R-Line, which has sports seats and a more aggressive exterior to match. Then you move into the performance models: the PHEV GTE, the famous GTI and more focused GTI Clubsport, the diesel GTD and the flagship, very powerful Golf R.
