It’s the ID. Polo after hitting the gym… it’s the new Volkswagen ID. Cross!
And the compact SUV is here to do battle with a slew of rivals in what’s becoming a crowded electric crossover market.
As you can gather from our intro here, the ID. Cross sits on the same ‘MEB+’ EV platform as the incoming VW ID. Polo.
Unlike the Polo, however, the ID. Cross gets chunkier proportions, a more upright stance, higher ride height, and a larger boot (the ID. Cross gets 475 litres where the ID. Polo makes do with 441 litres).

Besides the ID. Polo, the ID. Cross will also have to compete with other siblings from the VW Group stable, including the Skoda Epiq and CUPRA Raval.
And then there are the other contenders, including the Renault 4, Ford Puma Gen-E, and the accomplished Kia EV2.
It’s got its work cut out, then. Here’s how it all stacks up for the ID. Cross.

What is the VW ID. Cross?
The ID. Cross is Volkswagen’s baby electric SUV - a more muscular sibling to the VW ID. Polo hatchback.
VW says it ‘offers a level of quality, comfort and equipment that sets new standards in the small car and compact segment’.
There’s an elongated ‘flying roof’ and funky light signatures at the front and rear, while the cabin gets a fabric-covered dash and lots of physical buttons to appease the purists.

The ID. Cross measures 4,153 mm long, 1,581 mm tall and 1,794 mm wide, which is extremely similar to cars like the Ford Puma, Renault Captur, Toyota Yaris Cross, and Volkswagen’s own petrol-powered T-Cross.
Unlike the T-Cross, though, VW says the ID. Cross has more space for passengers while the 475-litre boot is 20 litres more than you get with the T-Cross.
A front trunk adds another 25 litres - perfect for stashing charging cables or McDonald’s wrappers.

What’s the electric range of the VW ID. Cross?
When the ID. Cross arrives properly in the coming weeks, it’ll be up for grabs with a choice of two batteries; a 37 kWh unit or larger 52 kWh pack.
That 52 kWh battery unlocks a range of up to 271 miles between charges, which is only marginally down on the 280 miles offered by the more aerodynamic ID. Polo, and which also stacks up well against the Renault 4 (max of 249 miles) and the Ford Puma Gen-E (up to 259 miles).
You get three power outputs, depending on which powertrain you choose; 116 PS, 135 PS, or 211 PS.

The smaller battery has 90 kW DC fast charging, the 52 kWh unit ups the speed to 105 kW DC. Expect a 10-80% charge in around 23-24 mins.
Vehicle-to-load comes as standard on all versions of the ID. Cross.
Meanwhile models with the 52 kWh battery also get a max 1,200 kg braked towing capacity - handy for when you’re taking your jet ski to the coast for the weekend.

What’s the interior of the ID. Cross like?
The ID. Cross’ cabin comes with a 10.25-inch digital cockpit and 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen. Like with the ID. Polo, you can flip a switch and set the digital cockpit to ape the classic look of the old Mk1 VW Golf, which is a nice touch.
Full UK specs are still to be revealed but in Germany, where the ID. Cross is already available, there are three trims; Trend, Life and Style.

The Life variants add goodies like 18-inch alloys, dual-zone air con, adaptive cruise control and a rear-view camera.
Top-of-the-range Style models boast LED Matrix headlights, an LED light strip with illuminated VW logos at the front and rear, heated seats, heated steering wheel, and keyless start.

How much does the VW ID. Cross cost in the UK?
Prices for the ID. Cross on the Continent begin at 27,995 Euros for the 37 kWh battery. That increases to 36,525 Euros for cars with the bigger 52 kWh pack.
While VW hasn’t confirmed it just yet, here in Blighty you’ll be looking at a price tag starting at around £25,000.
