Bold electric Ferrari Luce unveiled

  • Ferrari Luce finally revealed
  • First ever electric Ferrari
  • First ever four-door, five-seat Ferrari
  • Retro-modern looks inside and out
  • 0-62mph in 2.5 seconds
  • Range of up to 329 miles

If you’re a diehard Ferrari enthusiast, you might want to take a seat…

Because the new electric Luce has been revealed in full - and it’s a controversial car that thrusts the Prancing Horse into a new era.

The Luce is a car of firsts.

It’s not only the first Ferrari EV of all time, it’s also the first four-door, five-seat vehicle in the firm’s history.

With a roomy interior, rear-hinged doors for added practicality, clever active suspension and minimal road noise, the Luce is also billed as the most comfortable Ferrari of all time.

Those soft, almost cuddly looks will divide opinion, but there’s no denying the Luce’s performance.

Acceleration from 0-62mph goes by in just 2.5 seconds, thanks to power of 1,050 PS, which makes the Luce just as quick as the hybrid Ferrari SF90 Stradale.

You also get a range in excess of 329 miles between charges, which is roughly the same as the Rolls-Royce Spectre.

There’s no official word on price just yet, but you can expect to pay around £500,000 for the privilege of driving the Luce and it’ll sit above the SUV-like Purosangue in the firm’s range.

Who designed the Ferrari Luce?

The Luce was conceived in conjunction with Californian firm LoveFrom, which is led by British-American designer Sir Jony Ive and Australian creative Marc Newson.

Sir Jony is famous for having been Chief Design Officer at Apple Inc and having helped create gadgets like the iPhone, iMac and iPad.

Looking at the Luce, you can see those influences.

Ferrari talks about the car’s shell-like ‘glass house’ structure, with a floating front and rear aerodynamic wings that boost performance.

The Luce is a Grand Tourer - not an SUV-crossover like the Ferrari Purosangue - but it’s still a bold departure from Ferrari’s of old.

Having said that, there are still nods to the past, with the tail lights paying homage to the 360 Modena and 458 Italia.

There’s also a staggered wheel size set up, with 23-inch rims at the front and 24-inchers at the back.

What’s the interior of the Ferrari Luce like?

The Ferrari Luce is all about tactile physical knobs and buttons, rather than a screen-heavy interface.

It’s also pleasingly retro-modern, from the uncluttered, rectangular dash to the almost Seventies-like upholstery.

You get a 21-speaker sound system and all the usual creature comforts, including a sat nav system powered by Google Maps and Apple Maps.

Is the Ferrari Luce electric?

Yes, the Ferrari Luce is fully electric.

It’s underpinned by a 122 kWh battery - created by Ferrari in Maranello - and sees power of 1,050 PS channeled to all corners via four electric engines.

You get a range ‘in excess of’ 329 miles (530 km) but that figure is still to be confirmed once proper testing has taken place.

An 800V electric architecture sees rapid charging speeds top out at 350 kW DC.

How powerful is the Ferrari Luce?

The all-wheel drive Ferrari Luce enjoys power of 1,050 PS.

A relatively low kerb weight of 2260 kg helps the Luce to accelerate from 0-62mph in just 2.5 seconds and then on to a top speed of 192 mph.

That’s rapid by any standards, including those of Ferrari, and means the Luce is only marginally slower than the Ferrari F80 supercar (0-62mph in 2.15 seconds) and blows the Purosangue (0-62mph in 3.3 seconds) out of the water.

There’s also a clever active suspension system at play in the Luce, one that’s derived from the Ferrari F80.

Ferrari explains: “Each wheel is equipped with one actuator for traction and regeneration, one for the steering angle and one to control vertical movement. The ability to adapt torque distribution in real time to road conditions and desired performance provides exceptional freedom and precision of control. Each of the Ferrari Luce’s wheels is therefore perfectly attuned to the driver’s input, allowing the driver to experience a single, fluid movement. Torque vectoring and the elastic balance of the suspension system also assist in changing direction, enhancing the car’s agility and ease of driving.”

Does the Ferrari Luce have a synthetic sound system?

Yes, the Ferrari Luce does have a synthesised sound system.

But the Italian firm is at pains to point out that the tech simply amplifies the existing noise generated from the car’s mechanics - in the same way pickups boost the din of an electric guitar.

The sound changes according to which setting you’re in and is transmitted both internally and externally.

Road noise is significantly reduced, says Ferrari, thanks to the first elastically-mounted subframe in Maranello’s history, as well as the aforementioned active suspension and extensive sound-proofing.

What are the main rivals to the Ferrari Luce?

The Ferrari Luce is expected to cost around £500,000 when it goes on sale later this year.

It’ll compete with other pricey EVs like the Rolls-Royce Spectre and the range-topping Porsche Taycan Turbo GT.

It’ll also be targeting potential Ferrari Purosangue customers who want comfort and practicality but want to swap the SUV’s 6.5-litre petrol engine for something a bit greener.

This was our first time leasing a vehicle and Alex was extremely helpful with guiding us through the process. It all went very smoothly from the paperwork to the delivery and the portal allowed us to be completely up to date with the progress. We will certainly use Select again in future.
