Ever wondered if a supercar from the 1980s could keep pace with a relatively affordable modern electric SUV?
Well, wonder no more, because the Skoda Elroq vRS has just trounced the Ferrari Testarossa, Lamborghini Countach and Porsche 944 Turbo in a drag race.
They say you should never meet your heroes - and seeing the Countach make a lot of noise without going anywhere particularly quickly is a slightly sorry sight.

But we already knew that supercars of a certain vintage are no longer rapid by modern standards.
And the stunt highlights the fact that the Elroq vRS is the fastest-accelerating Skoda of all time, doing the 0-62mph run in 5.4 seconds.

Pietro Panarisi, Head of PR & Communications at Skoda UK, said: "Many of us grew up admiring the supercars of the 1980s. They were the benchmark for performance and captured the imagination of a generation. What makes the Elroq vRS so exciting is that it demonstrates how far automotive technology has progressed over the decades. It delivers acceleration that rivals cars once considered unattainable performance icons, while also offering the practicality, comfort and usability customers expect from a modern Skoda. Unlike most poster cars, there's enough room for shopping bags, suitcases and the family dog."

What is the Skoda Elroq vRS?
The Elroq vRS is the performance variant of Skoda’s otherwise mild-mannered family car.
It costs from £46,970 to purchase outright - still less than the £62,500 it cost to buy a new Ferrari Testarossa back in 1985!

With the Elroq vRS, you get a 77 kWh battery and dual motor set-up for all-wheel drive and power of 340 PS and 545 Nm of torque.
The first 62mph goes by in 5.4 seconds while top speed maxes out at 111 mph.
Despite all of that oomph, you still enjoy a 344-mile range and rapid charging speeds up to 185 kWh for quick energy replenishes.

Which car ran the Elroq vRS closest in the Skoda drag race?
In the drag race, held at Dunsfield Aerodrome in Surrey, it’s the Ferrari Testarossa (official 0-62mph time of 5.3 seconds) that ran the Elroq vRS closest… but was still almost a second behind the Skoda when crossing the finish line.

The Lamborghini Countach (0-62mph in 5.7 seconds, officially) arrived home next in third place, followed by the Porsche 944 Turbo (0-62mph in 5.6 seconds back in the day) in fourth.

As Skoda points out, ‘the sort of acceleration that once belonged exclusively to six-figure dream machines is now available in a fully electric SUV designed for everyday life’.

Whether the Elroq sounds as good as a naturally aspirated, 5.2-litre Lamborghini V12 at full chat is, however, another story entirely…
