Third-gen Audi Q7 revealed - and it can now run on cooking oil!

  • New Audi Q7 set to arrive this summer
  • Priced from less than £82,000
  • Bold, imposing new shape
  • Will launch with 3.0-litre mild hybrid diesel engine
  • You can also top up the tank with hydrotreated vegetable oil
  • Adaptive air suspension and quattro all-wheel drive come as standard

This is the new Audi Q7 - a bold reworking of the firm’s versatile 7-seater that can now run on vegetable oil.

The third-gen Audi Q7 will arrive in the UK later this summer priced from less than £82,000 and with full specs still to be revealed.

It’s an eye-catching update for Audi’s largest SUV (the sportier Audi Q8 is actually shorter and lower and gets a more coupe-like silhouette) which brings imposing, boxier styling, a chain-mail style front grille and chunky side air intakes placed higher at the front.

The Q7 will launch with a 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine producing 299 PS and which is mated to mild hybrid tech.

What’s more, that diesel V6 can also run on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), produced from waste material like used cooking oil, which can lower your CO2 emissions by up to 95 per cent, according to Audi.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Is the third-gen Audi Q7 still a seven-seater?

Yes, the Audi Q7 continues to be a 7-seater as standard, with ISOFIX mounting points available on every passenger seat.

Audi says the second row can accommodate three child seats side-by-side, while electrically adjustable seating and flexible configurations enhance everyday usability.

Luggage capacity ranges from 581 litres with all seats in place to a maximum of 1,980 litres when the rear seats are folded.

So, the Q7 is still a premium family load-lugger with bags of appeal, even with the impending arrival of the larger Audi Q9 (which is available with 6 or 7 seats).

What’s new with the third-gen Audi Q7’s styling?

The third-gen Audi Q7 adopts a more upright stance compared with the existing model, and the biggest design differences can be found at the front end.

There’s a larger front grille, a taller bonnet line, more prominent air intakes, and the famous four-ring badge is positioned slightly higher than before.

The outgoing Q7 is softer, more rounded, where the new Q7 appears cleaner, slightly boxier, and that little bit more modern (if slightly more conservative).

Beauty is, as always, in the eye of the beholder so you’ll have your own personal view about the Q7’s evolution.

Can the new Audi Q7 really run on used chip fat?

Yes! The latest Audi Q7 will launch with a 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine that’s supported by mild hybrid tech and which gets power of 299 PS and 630 Nm of torque.

That’s actually more powerful than the existing Audi Q7 ‘286’ powertrain - and we expect even more potent mills to follow, including the one for the Audi SQ7.

The drivetrain is complemented by standard quattro all-wheel drive, an eight-speed automatic transmission, adaptive air suspension and all-wheel steering.

The new 3.0-litre V6 can also run on something called hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) - a renewable diesel fuel made from waste oils and fats rather than crude oil.

You can use HVO as pure fuel or you can treat it as an admixture. Audi reckons it can reduce your CO2 emissions by up to 70-95 per cent compared with common-or-garden diesel.

Where can you get HVO from in the UK? Public availability remains pretty limited in the UK, with only a relatively small number of forecourts currently offering HVO at the pump, meaning most users obtain the fuel through specialist suppliers.

What else is new with the Audi Q7?

You can spec your new Audi Q7 with a large panoramic glass roof with switchable transparency.

Technology has been upgraded throughout the cabin, with Audi's curved OLED panoramic display dominating proceedings and with the cabin also boasting a standard passenger touchscreen, head-up display and access to the Audi Application Store.

Audi's latest voice assistant gets ChatGPT integration when required.

Audi has also introduced what it describes as a world-first advanced turn signal system. At night, indicators can be projected onto the road surface alongside the vehicle, providing an additional visual warning to cyclists, pedestrians and other road users.

You get the usual suite of driver assistance and safety systems, including a new Emergency Assist system that can steer the vehicle towards the hard shoulder and bring it safely to a stop if the driver becomes unresponsive.
