It’s the maddest thing to come out of Gloucestershire since cheese rolling.

And now the McMurtry Spéirling can be yours from around £1.2m after a production version of the most bonkers EV going was officially unveiled.

What is the McMurtry Spéirling PURE?

In case you’re not familiar, the McMurtry Spéirling, first unveiled way back in 2021, is an electric hypercar and the brainchild of late Irish inventor and businessman Sir David McMurtry.

McMurtry is headquartered in Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire.

And the Spéirling PURE (named after an Irish word for a thunderstorm) is the fully fledged production version that folks can buy - though it’s still strictly track-only. A road-legal version has been mooted but there are all sorts of regulatory hurdles to jump through before McMurtry gets to that stage.

The one-seat Spéirling’s party piece is its ‘Downforce-on-Demand’ system.

Two high speed fans generate suction, literally sticking the Spéirling to the road. Last year we told you how the Spéirling was literally able to drive upside down (on a purpose built platform) as the system produces up to 2,000kg of downforce… from 0mph.

With that much suction, it’s no surprise the Spéirling has claimed countless records, including notching the fastest ever time at Goodwood’s hill climb and also being the fastest ever car around the Top Gear Test Track.

It lapped the TG circuit in 55.9 seconds - shaving more than 3.0 seconds off the time previously set by a Renault F1 car!

With air from the downforce system expelled out the back, the Spéirling also produces a noise that sounds like a jet engine, which is a far cry from most EVs.

How powerful is the McMurtry Spéirling PURE?

Underpinning the Spéirling is a 100 kWh battery that sends 1000 bhp to the rear wheels via twin motors and an E-differential.

Acceleration from 0-60mph can be had in 1.55 seconds while you’ll hit a top speed of 190mph.

The Spéirling's relatively low weight (for an EV) of 1,350kg helps on that front.

In terms of range, McMurtry says you’ll be able to pin the throttle at speeds comparable to a Le Mans Prototype 2 car for between 40-50km of circuit use.

What else do you get with the McMurtry Spéirling PURE?

An all-new carbon-fibre monocoque and a longer wheelbase compared with prototype models improves packaging, safety and driver comfort.

Wider doors, improved visibility, custom-moulded seating and a redesigned cockpit make the single-seater easier to live with, while headlights, indicators and integrated service panels reflect the company's emphasis on usability rather than outright spectacle.

Owners will also benefit from straightforward charging, with the battery capable of replenishing from 20 to 95 per cent in as little as 20 minutes on suitable high-power chargers. McMurtry has even developed a portable charging unit for circuits lacking permanent infrastructure.

Every Spéirling PURE will be individually specified through an extensive personalisation programme, while owners will gain access to factory-supported driving events and technical support through the McMurtry Owners Club.

Built by hand at McMurtry's new Cotswolds headquarters, the Spéirling PURE is priced from £995,000 before taxes and options, with first customer deliveries due later this year.

It will make its production debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed before appearing at The Quail during Monterey Car Week.
