KGM Musso EV - everything you need to know!

  • New KGM Musso EV
  • Fully-electric lifestyle pick-up
  • Built with leisure activities in mind
  • 500kg payload
  • Range of up to 290 miles
  • UK launch in the works but not confirmed

Strewth, mate, KGM has gone and built an Aussie-style ute!

Well, sort of.

What you’re looking at is the KGM Musso EV. As the name suggests, it’s a fully-electric truck that boasts a range of up to 290 miles between charges and some seriously cool styling.

But it’s not your typical pick-up. Not at all.

KGM describes it as a ‘mid-size pick-up for urban drivers’. It’s a lifestyle pick-up, then, the sort that’ll be more at home on a family camping trip than doing hard yakka on the farm.

Yes, it’s all-wheel drive and yes, there’s a proper load bed in the back. Yet the max payload is 500kg, about half that of a Ford Ranger, and the towing capacity is down on other more rugged trucks, at 1,800kg.

Rather than your typical body-on-frame chassis, the Musso EV is built on a regular unibody, SUV-based platform and shares its underpinnings with the electric KGM Torres EVX (which we tested earlier this year).

So, it’s a passenger-car based vehicle with an open cargo tray at the back. So far, so ute. Fair dinkum.

And after driving one of only two UK prototypes this week, we’d love to see the KGM Musso EV enjoying a proper UK launch.

Here’s everything you need to know:

So is the KGM Musso EV a concept vehicle, then?

Yep, for now anyway. While the Musso EV is already on sale in its native Korea, and it’s highly likely to go on sale in Australia (I mean, why wouldn’t it?), there are no concrete plans to launch it here in the UK. Yet.

KGM has instead brought two prototype models to the UK in order to test the water and to perhaps whet the appetite. If the journos love it (we did) and there’s enough interest from customers, you can expect the Musso EV to arrive in showrooms soon.

Is the KGM Musso EV based on the Torres EVX SUV?

The diesel-powered KGM Musso is a very different beast to the KGM Musso EV and the electric model has styling all of its own.

The Musso EV is instead a sibling of the KGM Torres EVX, an electric SUV.

There are hints of the Torres EVX everywhere you look, from the angular front face and grab handles on the bonnet to the copper-coloured strip that runs horizontally across the interior.

The cabin is pretty much identical to the Torres EVX, coming with twin 12.3-inch screens, heated and ventilated nappa leather seats, heated steering wheel, dual zone air con and a 3D surround-view camera.

You also get SUV-like creature comforts including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and intelligent cruise control.

How does the KGM Musso EV drive?

In short, really well. We enjoyed a blast in one on country roads near Coventry this week and came away thinking that there really is a niche for it in the UK leasing market.

Let’s start with the basics.

The Musso EV is underpinned by a 80.6 kWh battery that unlocks a range of up to 290 miles between charges. That’s for the 2WD model - the full-on 4x4 gets a range of around 235 miles on a single charge.

There’s decent amounts of power, at 207 PS and 339 Nm of torque, which is actually a shade more powerful than the Torres EVX, thanks to the slightly larger battery.

We don’t have a precise 0-62mph figure just yet. But the Musso EV certainly felt sprightly on the road and because of its SUV-based chassis and suspension, you get none of the traditional shudder and shake that you might experience with a more hard-grafting pick-up when it’s not fully-laden.

Charging is properly rapid, too, thanks to 300 kW DC skills. A public charge from 10-80% should take around 36 mins, while using an 11 kW AC charger will give you a full replenish in 10 hours.

Who is the KGM Musso EV aimed at?

This isn’t a traditional pick-up workhorse, though there’s a real charm in that. KGM says the Musso EV lets you ‘enjoy greater freedom and ease in outdoor adventures and leisure activities’, which is a good summary.

It’s for people who love the look of a pick-up but have zero need to haul bags of cement to the work site or to pluck a poorly sheep from the side of a rain-drenched mountain(although the 4WD variant will probably have a good go at doing just that).

Will the Musso EV come to the UK? Only time will tell, but we’re getting good vibes and we reckon it’d be an interesting addition sector - and might even tempt a lot of people away from 4x4 SUVs.
