A new study has revealed the UK’s most and least expensive vans to repair, showing just how much running costs can vary between models.
The Van Repair Index, compiled by temporary van insurance provider Tempcover, analysed 20 of the UK’s most popular vans by combining average repair bills with independent reliability scores across major components such as engines, gearboxes and brakes.
At the top of the table, smaller vans dominate. The Nissan NV200 (now replaced by the Nissan Townstar) came out on top overall, with an average repair bill of just over £300 and scoring 9.1 out of 10 on Tempcover’s reliability rating. Close behind was the Fiat Doblo Cargo (below), which had the lowest average repair cost in the study, at £283.
Other strong performers included the Peugeot Partner, Mercedes Vito and Citroen Dispatch.
At the bottom of the list, large vans proved far more expensive to fix. The Citroen Relay had an average bill of £1,262 per job.
The Volkswagen Crafter (below) and Ford Transit Custom weren’t far behind, both averaging over £1,100 per repair. The full-size Ford Transit also featured among the least affordable to maintain, with typical repair costs above £1,000.
Across the 20 models detailed, the research highlights that smaller vans tend to be cheaper to maintain. With lighter loads, smaller engines and shorter labour times, their running costs stay lower than those of full-size panel vans.
Engine and gearbox repairs remain the priciest jobs, regardless of the model, with some vans averaging more than £3,000 for major engine work alone.
