Isuzu D-Max - more power for 2026?

  • More powerful Isuzu D-Max on the horizon
  • UK set to get larger 2.2-litre diesel engine already available in other markets
  • Power of 163hp and 400Nm of torque
  • 10% increase in torque
  • 10% improvement in fuel economy

Isuzu’s popular D-Max pick-up could soon receive a welcome boost in performance, and it won’t be the forthcoming electric version.

The brand’s 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine, currently serving in the Asia-Pacific region and Australia, is expected to make its way into global markets, including the UK.

The upgraded four-cylinder unit delivers 163hp and 400Nm of torque. While the power output is similar to the existing 1.9-litre engine, the torque figure is increased by more than 10%. That torque also arrives much earlier in the rev range, making the 2.2 feel livelier and more capable when towing or carrying heavy loads.

The new engine delivers around 45mpg, roughly 10% better than the current 1.9, despite the added performance. Those gains come alongside a new eight-speed automatic gearbox, replacing the existing six-speed unit. In markets where it’s been introduced, manual versions are no longer offered.

The 2.2-litre engine is currently built to Euro 5 standards, so it would need minor updates to comply with Euro 6e emissions rules before being launched in the UK. Even so, insiders suggest that, with production already underway and the 1.9-litre being phased out elsewhere, the UK’s adoption seems likely – potentially arriving here during the first half of 2026 as part of a wider model-year refresh.

While the spotlight is currently on Isuzu’s upcoming D-Max EV, expected in early 2026, the more efficient 2.2 diesel could play an equally important role. With Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate rules requiring manufacturers to meet electric sales targets or face fines, improving the efficiency of the brand’s core diesel line-up remains a priority.

Isuzu told Select that its current focus is on the forthcoming D-Max EV, due early in 2026, which it says will sit alongside the diesel model.
