Toyota teases mini Land Cruiser ‘FJ’

  • Toyota launches Land Cruiser FJ
  • Smaller version of regular Land Cruiser
  • Roughly same size as three-door Land Rover Defender 90
  • 2.7-litre petrol engine
  • Power of 163 PS
  • Not yet confirmed for the UK

Like the look of the Land Cruiser but want something a bit more compact? Toyota might just have come up with a solution to that problem.

What you’re looking at is the Land Cruiser ‘FJ’ (it means ‘Freedom & Joy’) and it’s a pint-sized version of the regular, full fat Land Cruiser.

Well, we say ‘pint sized’, but at 4,575mm long, 1,855mm wide, and 1,960mm tall, it’s still about the same size as a Land Rover Defender 90 or Jeep Compass and not nearly as diminutive as the much-missed Suzuki Jimny.

It’s powered by a 2.7-litre petrol engine that develops modest power of 163 PS and 246 Nm torque and comes (of course) with Toyota’s part-time four-wheel drive system.

Toyota says this new version will ‘allow even more customers to enjoy the Land Cruiser’.

But there are a few catches.

Will the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ be launched in the UK?

The Land Cruiser FJ will be thrust into the Japanese market mid-2026 followed by other global locations, likely Asia, Middle East and Latin America.

At the time of writing, however, there’s no confirmed plan to sell the Land Cruiser FJ in Europe.

Let’s keep everything crossed that things change, because the FJ could offer some stiff competition to the Land Rover Defender, and other rugged SUVs.

What are the design features of the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ?

The first thing that strikes you about the Land Cruiser FJ is its smaller proportions and squarer cabin when compared to the regular Land Cruiser.

Toyota says it ‘expresses a lean, strong sense of mass and fun through a rectangular body with a dice motif and chamfered edges’.

Both the front and rear corner bumpers are removable, which makes it easier (and presumably much cheaper) to repair.

The cabin gets a horizontal instrument panel and enough physical buttons that drivers can ‘experience the joy of mobility’, says Toyota.

Is the Land Cruiser FJ good off-road?

The Land Cruiser FJ should prove just adept through the tough stuff as the regular, bullet-proof Land Cruiser.

Part-time 4WD is a given while a shorter wheelbase improves manoeuvrability. The addition of braces under the floor and higher body rigidity also boost handling stability.

The Land Cruiser FJ is due to be officially unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 which begins later this month.
