All-wheel-drive Volkswagen e-Transporter arrives

  • Updated VW e-Transporter revealed
  • Gets bigger battery, longer range, and all-wheel drive
  • Range increases to 236 miles
  • 13% more range than previous model
  • New e-Transporter available to lease now with Select Van Leasing

Volkswagen is introducing a series of updates for the e-Transporter, bringing longer range, quicker charging and the option of all-wheel drive.

The changes closely follow those recently confirmed for the Ford E-Transit Custom, which is no surprise given the two vans share the same underlying platform. For buyers, it means the e-Transporter now addresses several of the practical concerns that have limited the appeal of electric vans beyond short, urban routes.

Does the new VW e-Transporter have a bigger battery?

The biggest change is a new battery with a usable capacity of 70kWh, up from the previous 64kWh. Volkswagen says this delivers a range of up to 236 miles, which is around 13% better than the existing model. While official figures rarely reflect real-world use, especially once a van is loaded, the extra capacity should make the e-Transporter easier to live with on longer or less predictable daily routes.

What's the charging speed of the updated VW e-Transporter?

Charging performance has also been improved. The e-Transporter now supports DC rapid charging at up to 125kW, allowing a 10–80% charge in around 30 minutes at a suitable rapid charger. Volkswagen highlights that a brief 10-minute stop can add roughly 60 miles of range.

Is the VW e-Transporter all-wheel drive?

Volkswagen is also adding a 4Motion all-wheel drive option. This setup adds a second electric motor on the front axle that will work alongside the existing rear-mounted motor. Because the two motors aren’t connected, the system can shift torque between the axles almost instantly, improving traction and stability on wet roads, loose surfaces or uneven ground.

Volkswagen says the system works in conjunction with the van’s stability and traction control systems, using targeted braking and torque distribution to keep the e-Transporter stable when grip is limited.

What power does the VW e-Transporter have?

Despite the battery upgrade, power outputs remain unchanged, with the upgraded van (including the all-wheel-drive version) retaining the three familiar outputs: 136hp, 218hp, and 286hp.

The updated Volkswagen e-Transporter range is due to arrive in early 2026, with UK pricing and full specifications expected to be confirmed closer to order books opening.
