Ford E-Transit Custom gains longer range and AWD

  • Updates for Ford E-Transit Custom
  • Bigger battery, faster charging, AWD
  • Range rises up to 232 miles
  • AWD with active torque distribution
  • Latest models available to order now with Select Van Leasing

The Ford E-Transit Custom is receiving a package of upgrades for 2026, with a larger battery, quicker rapid charging and the introduction of a new all-wheel-drive option.

In a move that existing operators will welcome, Ford has also said that charging improvements will be rolled out to vans already on the road via over-the-air software updates.

New E-Transit Custom models will switch to an upgraded battery with usable capacity increasing from 64kWh to 71kWh. According to Ford, this delivers more than a 10% uplift in range, pushing the official WLTP figure to up to 232 miles.

The extra usable capacity should translate into greater day-to-day flexibility, allowing longer routes, heavier payloads or colder-weather operation with less pressure to recharge during a shift.

Faster DC charging for new and existing vans

Charging performance also improves, with the E-Transit Custom now supporting DC charging at up to 125kW, cutting the 10–80% recharge time to under 30 minutes. That’s roughly 10 minutes quicker than before and enough to add close to 70 miles of range in a 10-minute stop.

Importantly, current E-Transit Custom owners are not being left behind. An over-the-air software update will reduce the 10–80% charging time of existing 64kWh vans by around 14 minutes, bringing it down to approximately 25 minutes, with no hardware changes required.

“For Ford Pro, a vehicle leaving the production line is just the start of our journey with the customer,” said Hans Schep, general manager of Ford Pro Europe. “We’re committed to ensuring businesses get the best out of their vehicles by continuing to enhance the product once it’s in their hands.”

New AWD system

Ford is also introducing an all-wheel-drive option for the E-Transit Custom. Rather than a traditional mechanical setup, the system uses two independent electric motors, one driving the rear axle and a new high-power unit driving the front wheels. Torque is continuously varied between axles depending on available grip.

Each motor can deliver the van’s full output independently, with power options of 136hp, 218hp, or 286hp available depending on specification. In its most potent form, the AWD E-Transit Custom delivers a combined 630Nm of torque from standstill, more than 50% higher than the rear-wheel-drive version.

Ford says the system monitors wheel slip up to 50 times per second, working in conjunction with traction and stability control to manage grip front-to-rear and side-to-side. Individual wheels can be braked independently to maintain stability on uneven or cambered surfaces, while torque distribution is adjusted to help counter understeer and oversteer.

Despite the added hardware, the dual-motor layout can also improve efficiency in stop-start urban use. Regenerative braking can be applied through both motors at lower speeds, increasing energy recovery by up to 50% compared with the rear-wheel-drive model.

The upgraded 71kWh battery, faster DC charging and new all-wheel-drive system will be introduced on E-Transit Custom models in early 2026. Over-the-air charging improvements for existing vans will be automatically rolled out to vehicles already in service.

The AWD option will be offered across the full E-Transit Custom line-up, including Panel Van, Kombi, Double-Cab-in-Van and MultiCab variants.
