If cars were footballers: our ultimate starting XI

  • The ultimate car first XI: Which models make the team?
  • Do we park the bus, or go full throttle 'til full time?
  • Dependable defenders, pacey full backs
  • Dynamic midfield duo
  • Big man, little man up top
  • Classic 4-4-2 formation

We've picked or ultimate football first XI from some of Britain's favourite cars - but are we destined for silverware or staring a cup exit in the face?

Find us on our socials and have your say!

With the big summer tournament reaching its crescendo, we thought we'd take a look at what a footy team would look like comprising vehicles, not people.

We've gone with a tried-and-trusted 4-4-2 formation (Big Sam would be proud) and attempted to find a starting eleven that blends no-nonsense determination with both flair and pace.

But have we got it right? Take a look and come up with your own suggestions.

Here's our thinking about the line-up.

Goalkeeper: Land Rover Defender

Muscular, powerfully-built yet also poised. Like a burly farmer, not afraid to stare-down a rampaging bull running full pelt towards it.

Centre backs: Skoda Octavia Hatchback, Kia Sportage

Modern centre backs need to be as skilful as they are tough and we wanted to avoid having a pair of enormous cloggers at the back. The Sportage and Octavia are big enough to hold their own but quick enough to get around the pitch. Like Dion Dublin, we can see them doing a stint up top in the final minutes, too.

Full backs: Renault 5, Volvo XC40

In a classic 4-4-2 shape, the full backs need to run and run for 90 minutes, tracking wingers and supporting our own attacks. The determined little Renault 5 and Volvo XC40 are quick enough to track back and nippy enough to snap at heels.

Central midfield: Jaecoo 7, Volkswagen Golf

Like our CB pairing, we wanted midfielders that complemented each other. The Jaecoo 7 and VW Golf are both popular family cars, but also have their own unique set of skills. We can see them dovetailing well together. We can also imagine the versatile, box-to-box Golf picking the ball up on half way and pinging the perfect pass to our forward line with barely a shrug.

Wingers: BYD Seal, BMW M5 Saloon

We need rapid acceleration on the wings and we've gone with an electric/plug-in hybrid combo with pace to spare. The refined BYD Seal EV can get up the pitch from 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds and is capable (we reckon) of hanging a ball in the box for our striker to nod home. The BMW M5 Saloon, meanwhile, is a bruising powerhouse in the Adama Traoré mould, capable of bulldozing its way through any defence.

Strikers: Porsche Taycan, Abarth 600e

Yep, it's the  classic 'big man, little man' combo - think Niall Quinn and Kevin Phillips (if you know, you know) or Michael Owen and Emile Heskey in their Liverpool and England pomp. The Porsche Taycan has the pace to surprise any centre back - and it's a big car, too, with a formidable stance. The Abarth 600e, meanwhile, is in the right place to get on the end of the Taycan's knock downs before thundering home from close range. As a feisty Italian, we can also imagine the Abarth 600e gesticulating wildly at the ref while narrowly avoiding a sending off.

Rubin Ball was our Leasing Consultant for the new Chery Tiggo 9. He was, from start to finish, excellent in every respect - timely and informative communications, polite, friendly, and delivered what he promised. I would not hesitate to use him again. Thanks Rubin!
