First BMW iX5 handed HUGE battery

  • Incoming BMW iX5 previewed
  • First ever electric X5
  • Gets a large 141 kWh battery
  • Estimated range of up to 500 miles
  • Set for a full reveal later this year
  • Hydrogen model to follow in 2028

The incoming BMW iX5 has been handed an enormous 141 kWh battery - the largest pack fitted to an electric Bimmer to date.

When it arrives properly later this year, the iX5 will be the first ever fully electric X5.

It’s seen here in disguised form ahead of a full unveiling.

And as befits a car that helped to define the modern luxury SUV segment, the iX5 is going big.

Underpinning the iX5’s 800V eDrive tech is a 141 kWh pack (that’s usable energy content, btw, not just gross capacity) that drives two electric motors - one on the front axle and another at the rear for xDrive electric all-wheel drive.

There’s no word just yet on range, but you only need to look at the more compact BMW iX3 to see what the iX5 might be capable of.

The iX3 gets a smaller 108 kWh battery and can journey up to 500 miles between charges.

The iX5 is a bigger, heavier car but that larger pack should still translate to an EV driving range somewhere between 450 and 500 miles.

Not bad, eh?

How powerful is the new BMW iX5?

The BMW iX5 is likely to be available with various powertrains.

But we do know that the BMW iX5 60 xDrive variant will get a whopping 578 hp.

That’s more powerful than the 530 hp BMW X5 M60 but less potent than the full fat, 625hp BMW X5 M Competition

What other powertrains will be available with the new BMW X5?

Besides the iX5, the regular X5 will be up for grabs with petrol and diesel mild hybrid engines, as well as a plug-in hybrid option.

The BMW X5 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid enjoys power of 490 hp, which is pretty much what’s available now, while the regular BMW X5 40 xDrive has been handed 400 hp, which represents an increase in oomph.

The other thing to note is that BMW is planning a proper, production hydrogen-powered X5, which is set to hit roads in 2028.

Details are slim right now but you can read about BMW’s long-running efforts to make hydrogen cars a thing in this hydrogen vehicle explainer

What else is new for the BMW X5?

The next-generation BMW X5 will introduce a host of technologies developed for BMW's Neue Klasse models (like the iX3).

There’s a Dynamic Performance Control system, powered by a high-speed computing platform known as the Heart of Joy. The system can process inputs and make adjustments up to ten times faster than previous BMW control units, continuously managing steering, braking, power delivery, energy recuperation and charging functions.

For electric versions, the tech is designed to improve efficiency by maximising regenerative braking while also delivering smoother, more natural stopping performance.

Adaptive suspension will come as standard, two-axle air suspension is an option.

There’s also new Level 2 semi-autonomous driving with optional Motorway and City Assistant functions.
