Mercedes-AMG electric concept ‘obliterates’ EV distance records

  • Concept AMG GT XX sets new EV distance records
  • Mercedes-AMG electric hypercar showcases production ready tech
  • Covered 3,404 miles in 24 hours
  • Travelled 24,901 miles (equivalent of circumference of Earth) in less than 8 days
  • Aided by team of drivers including F1’s George Russell

Mercedes-AMG has claimed a clutch of new EV distance world records with its astonishing Concept AMG GT XX.

The wide-mouthed Concept AMG GT XX was unveiled back in June this year as an electrifying vision of the future for Mercedes-AMG, the performance division of Mercedes-Benz.

The GT XX sits on the incoming AMG Electric Architecture (AMG.EA) platform and develops 1,360 hp via three ‘axial-flux’ electric motors - two at the rear, one at the front.

While it’s a concept for now, the GT XX boasts a slew of production-ready tech, from the state-of-the-art drivetrain to ultra-fast charging capabilities that can add almost 250 miles worth of range in 5 minutes, thanks to 850 kW DC skills.

And now - to showcase what the GT XX can really do - Mercedes-AMG has set a total of 25 performance records at the famous Nardò high speed test track Italy.

The feat was aided by a team of drivers that included none other than F1’s George Russell (below), as well as Lichfield-born Adam Christodoulou.

The first big record to fall was the distance covered by an EV in 24 hours.

The Concept AMG GT XX managed 3,404 miles (5,479 km) in 24 hours, breaking the previous record (held by the Xpeng P7) with over 1,500 km to spare.

When the GT XX’s large 114 kWh battery depleted, it quickly docked with a 850 kW charging station - tech that far exceeds current industry standards.

Besides the 24-hour EV record, the GT XX also managed to travel the circumference of the world - a distance of 24,901 miles - in less than 8 days.

And to prove the Concept GT XX’s mind-boggling achievements are easily repeatable, Mercedes-AMG did it with TWO test cars, not just the one.

The effort required 3,177 laps of the 12.68 km circuit. Remarkably, the two cars crossed the finish line just 25 km apart, which Mercedes-AMG says is a testament to ‘the exceptional long-term performance capability of the powertrain’.

George Russell, Mercedes‑AMG Petronas F1 team driver and test pilot, said: “As an F1 driver, I'm used to pushing technology to its absolute limits – the Concept AMG GT XX really impressed me. The axial flux motors respond as immediately and precisely as a Formula 1 drivetrain, but with an endurance that I have only ever experienced with combustion engines. This technology will revolutionise the driving experience – both on the racetrack and on the road.”
