Jaecoo 5 readies itself for UK roads

  • New Jaecoo 5 launches
  • Smaller sibling to Jaecoo 7
  • Chinese SUV with petrol and electric powertrains
  • Priced from £24,505

An affordable new EV is about to hit the leasing market - and the Jaecoo 5 is one you won’t want to miss.

Jaecoo is a Chinese automotive brand that first launched in the UK last year.

And it’s fair to say that Jaecoo (owned by mega-manufacturer Chery) has made an immediate impact.

The Jaecoo 7 is one of our most popular lease vehicles of the year so far, thanks to its winning mix of rugged good looks and attractive prices.

Now an even more affordable - and more compact - model is about to launch, and it’s one we reckon will be another smash hit.

Why should I lease a Jaecoo 5 SUV?

Size wise, the Jaecoo 5 competes with smaller SUVs and crossovers like the Hyundai Kona, Mazda CX-30 and Toyota C-HR.

It’s a bold looking vehicle, with an upright silhouette, wide shoulders, and a ‘waterfall’ front grille with eye-catching vertical slots.

Jaecoo says the 5’s body lines are ‘inspired by mountain ridges and dramatic natural landscapes’.

And it’s similarly easy on the eye in the cabin, too, which comes complete with portrait touchscreen and a six-speaker Sony sound system.

Is the Jaecoo 5 petrol or electric?

The Jaecoo 5 will launch with a traditional 1.6-litre petrol engine - but an electric Jaecoo 5 EV is coming up around the bend, too.

The petrol Jaecoo 5 gets147 PS and 275 Nm and is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Jaecoo says the front-wheel drive 5’s suspension has been specifically tuned to cope with the UK’s potholed roads.

Is the Jaecoo 5 practical?

A generous 480-litre boot expands to 1,180 litres with the rear seats folded flat while there’s room to accommodate five adults.

If you’re looking to lease an SUV that’ll cope with everything from the school run to adventures away at the weekend, the Jaecoo 5 should be on your list of options.

What price is the Jaecoo 5?

Petrol models begin at £24,505 for the entry-level ‘Pure’ trim while the range-topping ‘Luxury’ grade is £28,000.

How does that compare with rivals? Pretty well.

The Mazda CX-30 starts at £26,435 while the Hyundai Kona is priced from around £25,415.

What equipment does the Jaecoo 5 have?

Entry-level ‘Pure’ models come with a large portrait touchscreen, a six-speaker Sony audio system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a full suite of driver assistance and safety tech.

The swankier ‘Luxury’ trim adds goodies like heated and ventilated front seats and a tilting and sliding sunroof.
