About the Hyundai Kona

First launched in the UK in 2017, the Hyundai Kona is a practical and affordable compact SUV that’s suited to both urban and rural driving.

The Kona shares much in common with the Kia Niro (Kia is part of the Hyundai Motor Company), with both cars being built on the same platform.

The Hyundai Kona is, however, slightly shorter than the Kia Niro - which might make the Kona more attractive in some ways if you value city nimbleness over larger proportions.

When you lease a Hyundai Kona you’ve got a choice of either a traditional petrol engine or efficient full hybrid (which never needs to be plugged in) while Hyundai also offers the Kona Electric as a separate model.

Why lease the Hyundai Kona?

Futuristic styling meets family-friendly levels of practicality with the Hyundai Kona - and it sits at an attractive price point, too, beginning at around £27,000.

There’s a choice of two different petrol engines; one a 1.0-litre unit with power of up to 115 PS or a larger 1.6-litre mill with up to 150 PS.

The full hybrid is underpinned by a 1.6-litre engine and 1.32 kWh battery, gets power of 141 PS, and can return in excess of 60 miles to the gallon.

All variants are front-wheel drive and you can choose between manual or automatic transmissions.

Which Hyundai Kona powertrain is right for me?

1.0-litre Petrol

Engine: 1.0-litre petrol | Power: 100 PS or 115 PS | Acceleration: 0-62mph in 11.9 secs (for 115 PS model) | Fuel economy: Up to 48.7 mpg | Transmission: Manual.

1.6-litre Petrol

Engine: 1.6-litre petrol | Power: 138 PS or 150 PS | Acceleration: 0-62mph in 8.9 secs (for 150 PS model with automatic gearbox) | Fuel economy: Up to 45.5 mpg | Transmission: Manual or automatic.

Full hybrid

Engine: 1.6-litre petrol, 1.32 kWh battery | Power: 129 PS or 141 PS | Acceleration: 0-62mph in 11.2 secs (for 141 PS model) | Fuel economy: Up to 60.1 mpg | Transmission: Automatic.

Hyundai Kona Frequently Asked Questions

The Hyundai Kona is available to lease with either a traditional petrol engine or full hybrid powertrain. The regular petrol engines are either a 1.0-litre unit or a larger and more powerful 1.6-litre mill. The full hybrid powertrain is underpinned by a 1.6-litre engine and small 1.32 kWh battery and is capable of returning in excess of 60 miles to the gallon. It’s a self-charging hybrid so never needs to be plugged in.

If you’re looking to maximise fuel economy, you’ll want to lease the full hybrid Hyundai Kona rather than the regular petrol model, as you can enjoy up to 60 mpg with the hybrid compared to a max of around 48 mpg with the 1.0-litre petrol. The Kona’s CO2 emissions run from a high of 146 g/km with the larger 1.6-litre petrol engine to a low of 107 g/km with the full hybrid.

The Hyundai Kona isn’t a particularly quick car and is better suited to customers looking for comfort and practicality. The full hybrid has power of 141 PS and takes a leisurely 11.2 seconds to accelerate from 0-62mph. The fastest variant is the 1.6-litre petrol Kona with 150 PS, which can sprint from 0-62mph in around 8.9 seconds.

All versions of the Hyundai Kona come with a 466 litre boot which expands to 1,300 litres with the rear seats folded flat. While some rivals, including the Kia Niro, have slightly bigger boots, the Kona’s luggage space is still generous for the class and it can carry more than the Honda HR-V or Skoda Kamiq. Back seat space is impressive, even for taller passengers, and the current Kona’s proportions have been much improved compared with previous generations.

Which model you opt for will depend on how the vehicle is going to be used. But there are a few things to consider. The hybrid version of the Hyundai Kona has a higher asking price than the regular petrol model and will be more expensive to lease. However, potential fuel savings may help to balance out some of that extra cost, particularly if you’re a high mileage motorist.

This was by far the best experience I've ever had getting a car. I can only put that down to dealing with Nicola Holmes she made it so stress free and was kept upto date every step of the way. I've personally recommended her since getting the car.
