Fun-loving Honda Super-N is one of UK’s cheapest new EVs

  • Honda Super-N priced from £18,995
  • Makes it one of the UK’s cheapest new EVs
  • Combined range of 128 miles
  • City range of up to 199 miles
  • Honda hopes it delivers the ‘Joy of Driving’
  • Bold urban styling is on point

The funky Honda Super-N will launch with a lowly £18,995 price tag - but you’ll have to make do with a similarly small 128-mile combined range.

When order books open in the coming days the Super-N will establish itself as one of the UK’s cheapest electric vehicles.

That near-£19k fee puts it between rivals like the BYD Dolphin Surf and the Fiat 500e when it comes to cost.

With boxy crossover proportions and chunky flared wheel arches, the Super-N looks like it has had a performance modification right out of the box.

Punch the big purple ‘BOOST’ button on the steering wheel and you also unlock power of 95 PS for sprightly acceleration while the cabin is bathed in purple ambient lighting.

No wonder, then, that Honda is promising an ‘exciting and uplifting small car experience’.

But there’s a catch.

In combined driving, the Super-N will deliver a range of up to 128 miles between charges - falling behind most rivals including the much cheaper Dacia Spring (which gets a combined range of around 140 miles).

The range figure for the Super-N increases to 199 miles in city driving, with the Honda likely to spend most of its life in the urban jungle, but it’ll be down to you to decide whether the hatch’s head-turning looks are enough to distract you from its mile-munching abilities.

What size battery is fitted in the Honda Super-N?

The Super-N makes use of a small 29.6 kWh battery which (as we’ve mentioned above) delivers a range of either 128 combined, or 199 miles in the city.

Charging speeds hit 50 kW DC which enables a recharge to 80% in around 30 mins.

The pipsqueak Super-N weighs just 1,097 kg so it’ll be nimble and fun to drive.

And the Super-N’s party piece is its BOOST button.

When you’re just pootling about town, the Super-N develops power of 64 PS, enough to accelerate you from 0-62mph in a leisurely 14.51 seconds. There’s a top speed of 84mph.

Activate the BOOST function, however, and the power increases to 94 PS and while bringing the 0-62mph time down to 10 seconds.

What’s more, in BOOST mode the Super-N also replicates the shifting sensation of a seven-speed simulated transmission (you can blip up and down using the steering wheel paddles) while also piping ‘engine’ noise into the cabin via Active Sound Control.

(Our expert reviewer Maxine Ashford, above)

Is that tech a bit of a gimmick? Our reviewer Maxine Ashford got her mitts on the Super-N last week and reckons it’s all pretty convincing.

She added: “If you are expecting a high-performance car, then this is not for you. But it does deliver on so many counts. It’s easy to drive, so anyone switching from a Honda Jazz to an EV will be right at home with the Super-N. Additionally, it’s spacious, versatile and packed with easy-to-use technology. Plus it is genuinely fun to drive and the BOOST setting with all its gadgetry adds to the enjoyment levels. We loved it.”

It’s worth bearing in mind that sticking it in BOOST mode constantly will see your EV range dwindle.

How many seats does the Honda Super-N have?

Like many small electric hatchbacks, including the more expensive MINI Cooper Electric, the Honda Super-N has four seats.

However, those berths are ‘Magic Seats’ in that they can be folded in multiple ways to create more luggage space in the back.

You get a tiny 162-litres of luggage with the seats up, but that can expand to 967 litres with the seats folded, which is among the most spacious in the class.

What kit do you get as standard with the Honda Super-N?

There’s just one trim level with the Honda Super-N.

You get a 9-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a bunch of paint colours to choose from. The one you’re looking at here, btw, is called ‘Violet Pearl’.

The essential thing to know about the Honda Super-N’s cabin is that a full-on Bose audio system with a 20cm sub-woofer (slotted into a special compartment beneath the boot floor) really delivers when it comes to audio quality - and is pretty much unheard of at this price point.

So simple, the website is easy to use, clear and accurate, I just chose the car and sent an enquiry, then Danny contacted me to confirm my choice. He made it so easy for me, I just sat back while he did the legwork sorting the finance and ordering the car. Once he'd put everything in place, just a few signatures from me and the deal was done, all from the comfort of my armchair. Thanks Danny, we'll definitely be back for our next car
