BYD launches the funky Atto 2

  • New BYD Atto 2 launched
  • Smaller sibling to the Atto 3
  • Rugged exterior styling
  • Rival to cars like the Kia EV3 and Volvo EX30
  • Range of up to 261 miles between charges
  • Priced from £30,850

In the market for a funky urban electric SUV? The BYD Atto 2 is a new option to add to your leasing wishlist.

The Atto 2 is the baby brother to the larger and already-launched BYD Atto 3.

It’s priced from £30,850, which puts it into a dosh bracket that actually undercuts rivals like the Kia EV3 and Volvo EX30.

The styling is eye-catching, with rugged plastic moulding on the wheel arches and robust side skirts that look like they’d take a good shoeing (and which is also reminiscent of the old Citroen C5 Aircross).

There are two batteries up for grabs; a 51.1kWh unit and a larger 64.8kWh pack. Both are BYD’s special ‘Blade’ type batteries, which are shaped like a sword, completely integrated into the vehicle chassis, and said to improve body rigidity as well as improving space, and safety.

The Atto 2’s max EV range is either 214 miles or 261 miles, depending on which battery you go for.

And the great thing about the Atto 2 is that all models come properly loaded with kit as standard.

The entry-level Boost grade (smaller battery) comes with 17-inch alloys, a 12.8-inch rotatable touchscreen, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, a panoramic camera and 360-degree camera.

You also get an efficiency-boosting heat pump and vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology, for when you need to bring your posh coffee maker with you when you go camping.

The range-topping Boost trim (larger battery) adds extras like rear privacy glass and a comfier seat for the driver.

Public charging tops out at 155 kW DC (for the Comfort cars), which lets you take the energy in the battery from 30-80% full in around 21 minutes.

Besides the Kia EV3 and Volvo EX30, the BYD Atto 2 will have to compete with a slew of other compact SUVs, including the likes of the Smart #1, Renault Megane E-Tech and even the slightly larger Skoda Elroq.
