This new Ineos Grenadier is a bit of an animal… as it’s being built exclusively for tourists on safari.
Rewind the clock back ten years and Ineos boss Sir Jim Ratcliffe was bemoaning the demise of the old Land Rover Defender and dreaming up ways to plug the gap in the market.
He conceived of the idea (so the story goes) while on safari and then named the eventual product, the Grenadier, after his favourite boozer in Belgravia, London.
Now Ineos appears to have come full circle as it prepares to start production of the Grenadier Game Viewer - a bespoke version of the Grenadier SUV or Grenadier Commercial that’s designed specifically to ferry paying punters through lands teeming with lions, leopards, elephants and rhinos.
The Grenadier Game Viewer is bound for game reserves and luxury safari lodges across Sub-Sahara Africa - as well as ranches and estates in the US, Middle East and South East Asia.
They get either a long or extra-long wheelbase with seating for up to nine people and will be built at an Ineos assembly plant in Botswana.
Lynn Calder, CEO of Ineos Automotive, said: “This is the Grenadier coming full circle. Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s original inspiration for a modern, robust 4X4 came while on safari in Botswana almost ten years ago.
“This deep connection with Africa was borne out in the Goodwood concept and in the final production design. The teams at Hambach and Ineos Kavango have been working together for the last 18 months to bring the Grenadier Game Viewer to life as a full production model, and we can’t wait to see it in service.”
Four Grenadier-based vehicles converted to serve as Game Viewers will enter service next month.
Hiddn Lodge, a new ultra-luxury retreat near Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape region of South Africa, commissioned Ineos Kavango to convert full production Grenadiers to game viewer vehicles.
