Geely set for UK launch with EX5 SUV

  • New Geely EX5 SUV set for UK launch
  • Debut car from China’s Geely
  • Geely already owns Volvo, Polestar and Lotus
  • EX5 will arrive later this year

Chinese automotive giant Geely Auto has announced its official entry into the UK car market, unveiling plans to launch the all-electric Geely EX5 SUV later this year.

Geely, headquartered in Hangzhou, is no stranger to the British car market.

It already owns Volvo, Polestar and Lotus and has a 50% stake in Smart, alongside Mercedes-Benz.

Now Geely will become a standalone UK car leasing brand in its own right with the imminent launch of the EX5.

The EX5 will debut as a rival to established vehicles like the Skoda Enyaq, Ford Explorer and Kia EV6. We don't yet know the UK-specific details of the EX5, but where the car is sold elsewhere (including China) it gets a range of up to 380 miles between charges courtesy of a 68.39 kWh battery.

And to make sure the EX5 goes down well with UK drivers, Geely has roped-in Lotus Engineering to help hone the chassis and driving dynamics.

Mike Yang, General Manager of Geely Auto UK, says: “We know the Geely EX5 is a great product with features suited to the UK market. Working with Lotus Engineering gives us the confidence that the EX5 will deliver the performance and refinement that British drivers expect.”

Geely's entrance into the UK follows a record-breaking 2024, in which the company sold over 2.17 million vehicles globally, including 414,522 units exported—an impressive 57% year-on-year increase.

The UK represents a key frontier in Geely’s broader plan to grow its presence in more than 80 countries through its ‘Five by Five’ globalisation strategy, which integrates design, R&D, powertrain, testing, and AI.

Fleet buyers were given early access to production-ready EX5 units at the Company Car in Action event in June, as part of a wider effort to gauge customer sentiment ahead of the UK rollout.

With public sales channels expected to open by late summer and over 300 new sales and service outlets being added worldwide in 2025, Geely Auto is positioning the UK as a cornerstone of its European ambitions.

The process was really easy & hassle free from start to finish. Garry Rahman made my experience an absolute pleasure and was always on hand to answer any queries I had throughout the process of leasing my car. Delivery was prompt and cannot fault the entire process from start to finish.
