Citroen’s all-new C5 Aircross SUV, and its electric version, the e-C5 Aircross, is now on sale for an impressively low price.

The mid-size family favourite is back for a second generation with a fresh look, next-generation tech, and a pricelist that undercuts many of its rivals.

Available with either a petrol-powered mild-hybrid engine or full-electric power, the new C5 Aircross starts at £30,495 for the Hybrid 145 model and £34,065 for the electric e-C5 Aircross, which makes it up to £7000 cheaper than competitors like the Volkswagen Tiguan and £5000 less than the Skoda Enyaq.

What power options are there in the new Citroen C5 Aircross?

To start with, you can choose from the mild-hybridised Hybrid 145 petrol model, or the all-electric e-C5 Aircross in Standard Range form.

The Hybrid 145 has 145PS of power, including a 12PS electric motor, and uses a 48V mild-hybrid system built into a dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Unlike most mild hybrid systems, this can let the C5 Aircross run on electric power only – Citroen says it can do so at low speeds for up to 50% of urban journeys, cutting fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by around 15% compared to a standard petrol car.

For now, however, the e-C5 Aircross comes with a 73kWh battery with up to 322 miles of range and its electric motor makes 210PS. Other options will follow – a 195PS plug-in hybrid with a 53-mile electric range, and a Long Range electric model are planned for later in the year. The Long Range e-C5 Aircross will give you up to 421 miles from a single charge of its larger 97kWh battery. It’ll have more power too, at 230PS.

How does the new Citroen C5 Aircross look?

This is a sleeker, more sculpted Citroen SUV. The second-generation C5 Aircross has a more upright stance and a new LED lighting signature, with a front end designed for both road presence and aerodynamics. It’s a larger car than its predecessor, with more passenger space and boot room. Citroen promises a fairly whopping 651-litre boot with the back seats up, expandable to 1668 litres with the seats down.

What’s the new Citroen C5 Aircross like inside?

Citroen is on a big comfort focus at the moment, and that’s obvious inside the new C5 Aircross. The cabin has been completely reworked with sofa-like seats, with massage and ventilation functions on higher-spec models, and an interior that’s inspired by soft furnishings, right down to the padded material and wide, lounge-like layout.

The dashboard houses a new 13-inch touchscreen that floats down the dashboard like a waterfall (according to the official blurb, at least). That’s paired with a 10-inch digital driver’s display and physical climate controls – no need to tap through menus just to adjust the air-conditioning.

What trims are available?

There are three trims available across both powertrains. All three are broadly similar on the outside, but the differences are within with varying levels of standard equipment. The entry-level trim is the You!, which comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, full LED headlights, the full touchscreen infotainment system with built-in navigation, and a wireless smartphone charger, as well as adaptive cruise control and fabric seats in an Urban Grey colour scheme.

Upgrade to Plus and you’ll get 19-inch alloys on the electric model, front parking sensors and a 180-degree reversing camera, as well as keyless entry and ambient interior lighting. The cabin is clad in upgraded fabric in a Metropolitan Blue colour scheme and there are dark-tinted windows.

The top-spec model is the Max, which has heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, a head-up display and a different interior colour scheme called Hype Blue. There’s an electric boot lid with a hands-free function, and matrix LED headlights that let you keep high beam on at night without dazzling oncoming traffic. The e-C5 Aircross Max also gets a heat pump as standard.
