Vauxhall Frontera gets seven seats and 248-mile EV range

A new seven seater is about to be added to the Vauxhall line-up in the form of the incoming Frontera SUV, the manufacturer has revealed.

We got our first glimpse of the revived Frontera last month when we learned the rejuvenated model would be available with either a mild-hybrid or fully electric powertrain.

We now know the precise details of those engines, with the ‘Long Range’ EV variants enjoying a range of up to 248 miles between charges.

And Vauxhall has also revealed how the Frontera will be up for grabs with seven seats as an option, which is sure to appeal to families in search of affordable everyday transport.

The only other seven-seat Vauxhalls available right now are the van-like MPVs, the Combo Life and the Vivaro Life.

Full UK spec will be announced later this year when the Frontera becomes available to order, but here’s everything we know about this fresh Vauxhall so far.

The 48-volt mild-hybrid models will be powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine with power of either 100hp or 136hp, each mated to a six-speed, dual clutch automatic transmission.

The electric Frontera features a 113 hp electric motor. Entry-level cars will offer a range of more than 186 miles while the ‘Long Range’ version will be able to journey around 248 miles between charges. Rapid 100kW charging capabilities come as standard.

The Frontera will be available in three different trims - Design, GS and Ultimate - which are grades familiar to Vauxhall.

Standard-issue kit will include wireless smartphone connectivity while Vauxhall says the cabin will also feature two 10-inch widescreens as well as physical buttons for key functions, offering a ‘clean, detoxed user experience’.

The Frontera has been designed with long journeys in mind. There are new ‘Intelli-Seats’ that feature a slot in the middle that relieves pressure on the tailbone, while a 450-litre boot should be practical enough for most.

The Frontera should also feel right at home in the great outdoors.

A Vauxhall spokesperson explains: “For those who want to spend the night outdoors, the new Frontera can be ordered with optional roof rails and a roof tent with ladder specially designed for the SUV. After arriving at its destination, the Frontera can shoulder up to 240 kilogrammes on its roof.”

Rivals to the Frontera will include the Skoda Kodiaq, Dacia Duster and Nissan X-Trail.

James Taylor, Managing Director, Vauxhall, adds: “The New Frontera is our new family-size SUV, offering customers innovative and practical electric mobility at an affordable price. Highly flexible with up to seven seats, spacious, and with a choice of hybrid and electric powertrains, we’re confident that Frontera will appeal to new and existing audiences as well as sit very well in our revised SUV line-up in between Mokka and the forthcoming All-New Grandland.”
