The BMW 3 Series is celebrating its 50th anniversary - and it’s worth pulling a party popper for a car that shaped the German brand’s entire identity.

Since its debut at the 1975 Frankfurt International Motor Show, the BMW 3 Series has become a global phenomenon, selling over 20 million units across seven generations.

Launched as a successor to the BMW 02 Series, it quickly earned a reputation for delivering dynamic handling, rear-wheel-drive thrills, and a premium driver-focused experience previously unseen in its class.

For five decades, the 3 Series has consistently introduced segment-first innovations - from pioneering six-cylinder engines in 1977 to introducing advanced injection systems and the debut of all-wheel drive in 1985 (with the 325iX).

Today’s models offer mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains with extended electric range, while BMW has also teased a new future for the 3 Series with the incoming ‘Neue Klasse' saloon.

Originally offered as a two-door sedan, you can now lease a BMW 3 Series as either a saloon or practical ‘Touring’ estate.

And let’s now forget about the snarling M3, a car packing 530 hp and capable of accelerating from 0-62 mph in 3.5 seconds.

Here’s a quick look at the seven generations so far. Which one is your own personal favourite?

1st generation (launched 1975)

The first-generation BMW 3 Series introduced a driver-focused cockpit and offered powerful yet efficient four- and six-cylinder engines. Its rear-wheel drive, precise handling, and safety features brought luxury-class performance to a broader audience. The 3 Series quickly became BMW’s bestselling model. By 1981, sales had surpassed one million units.

2nd generation (launched 1982)

Featuring both four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines - including the brand’s first diesel and all-wheel drive models - the 2nd gen 3 Series offered enhanced efficiency, performance, and safety. Innovations included ABS, digital engine electronics, and even early electric prototypes. The M3 debuted with race-bred power, while body styles expanded to include four-door, Convertible, and Touring variants.

3rd generation (launched 1990)

This larger, sportier 3 Series launched as a four-door model, later joined by a Coupé, Convertible, and Touring. All engines produced at least 100 hp, with highlights including innovative straight-six units, turbo diesels, and the powerful M3. New features like VANOS, ABS, and optional ASC boosted performance and safety.

4th generation (launched 1998)

This late-Nineties 3 Series launched with tech like rain-sensing wipers, rear side airbags, and sat nav. New engines introduced direct-injection diesels, high-revving straight-sixes, and the ‘VALVETRONIC’ variable valve lift system for better efficiency. Dynamic Stability Control and a lightweight chassis enhanced handling and safety.

5th generation (launched 2005)

Larger yet lighter, the 5th gen BMW 3 Series offered more space, comfort, and safety - without added weight. A convertible with a retractable hardtop arrived. TwinTurbo engines brought added performance while Brake Energy Regeneration and Auto Start Stop improved efficiency further.

6th generation (launched 2012)

The sixth-generation BMW 3 Series, launched in 2012, introduced a broader model line-up, with a bigger-booted ‘Gran Turismo’ now part of the roster. Advanced technologies like the 8-speed Steptronic transmission and Head-Up Display made the 3 Series more appealing while a hybrid variant joined an expanded engine line-up with a new all-wheel drive ‘xDrive’ set-up. A new M3 Saloon delivered track-ready performance with 431 hp.

7th generation (launched 2018)

The 7th gen 3 Series brought with it enhanced aerodynamics and increased interior space. Digital innovation took centre stage with BMW Operating System 7.0, the Intelligent Personal Assistant, and the BMW Curved Display. Advanced driver aids, including the Reversing Assistant and Driving Assistant Professional, improved safety and convenience. The line-up expanded to include plug-in hybrid models, with the latest 330e now offering up to 61 miles of EV driving range on a single charge. As of now, BMW has delivered 2.5 million units globally.
