- Renault Filante Record 2025 concept launched
- Single-seater will aim to crack 1,000 km range barrier
- Uses same 87 kWh battery as Renault Scenic E-Tech
- Wouldn’t look amiss in Bruce Wayne’s garage
Holy radical Renault, Batman! It’s the comic book-shaped Filante Record EV!
This is no ordinary demo car, it’s a fully-electric Renault concept that aims to set a new benchmark when it comes to range and efficiency.
The so-called ‘Filante Record 2025’ has been handed the same 87 kWh battery as the award-winning Renault Scenic E-Tech.
But the similarities between the Filante Record and a bog-standard road car end there.
The rolling-lab is a single-seater with a streamlined, aerodynamic body. It measures 5.12 metres long (almost as big as a Rolls-Royce Spectre), just 1.19 metres tall and weighs 1,000 kg (which is lighter than a Fiat 500 Electric).
The Filante is packing friction-reducing tyres and sophisticated steer-by-wire and brake-by-wire tech.
While it looks like something straight outta Gotham, the Filante Record 2025 actually takes its inspiration from other important cars from Renault’s illustrious history.
One is the ‘40 CV des Records’, built in 1925 (below), which notched multiple speed records while hitting a top whack of around 124 mph - courtesy of a massive 9.12-litre engine developing around 140 hp.
Another Renault referenced by the Filante Record 2025 is the ‘Étoile Filante’, an aeronautics-inspired single-seater built in 1956, which broke several speed records at the Bonneville Salt Lake Flats in the US while reaching speeds of up to 191.9 mph, thanks to its 270 hp turbine engine
Sandeep Bhambra, Director of Advanced Design, Renault and Ampere, said: “We designed this vehicle as a sculpture in motion. Inspired by fighter planes and the speed records of the nineteenth century, it reflects both performance and timeless elegance. Every inch of the surface was crafted to capture the light and showcase the body lines, which appear to melt into the air. The blue windows and colour palette further underline this light and airy impression. The design as a whole seeks to convey an impression of flow and lightness.”
The front and rear wheel fairings give the Filante Record 2025 the appearance of a fighter jet while the visible screws on the bodywork are also inspired by aircraft construction techniques.
Renault has attempted to shed weight wherever possible, including with the stretched canvas seat that’s likened to a ‘hammock’.
So, the Filante Record certainly looks the part, but how far can it actually go on a single charge?
The short answer is, we don’t know yet. Renault’s engineers plan to carry out wind tunnel tests in spring 2025 before the aerodynamics will then be perfected.
Renault will be hoping the Filante Record 2025 can make it past the 1,000 km (621 miles) mark, with the Mercedes Vision EQXX having managed a 746-mile jaunt back in 2022.
The Renault Filante Record 2025 will be on show at the Rétromobile motor show in Paris from 5 to 9 February 2025.
