Bold new BMW iX enjoys big power boost

  • New BMW iX unveiled
  • Revised front grille, aprons and lights
  • M70 xDrive models get a whopping 659 hp
  • Priced from £74,400 and set to arrive May 2025

BMW’s powerful iX SUV is about to get even more potent, after the EV was handed more power and a significantly better range between charges.

The all-wheel drive BMW iX has been around since 2021, when it was launched as the German firm’s first purpose-built all-electric Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV).

The 4x4 EV does battle with rivals like the Audi Q8 e-tron and the Polestar 3.

Up until now, the iX has enjoyed a range of up to 382 miles between charges while the most potent M60 xDrive models pack power of 619 hp.

All that, though, is changing with this incoming new version that’s set to hit roads in May of 2025.

A newly-launched iX xDrive60 powertrain (which succeeds the outgoing iX xDrive50 variant) can now journey up to 426 miles between trips to the plug. That comes via a new 109.1 kWh battery with ‘redeveloped performance electronics, advancements in battery technology and new measures to enhance overall efficiency’, says BMW.

The entry-level iX xDrive40 powertrain has been jettisoned for a new iX xDrive45 unit.

Here the battery has grown in size by 30 per cent to 94.8 kWh while unlocking a range of up to 374 miles (the old xDrive40 models could only manage a max of around 263 miles).

And then there’s the performance iX M70 model (below) - which will replace the existing iX M60.

You get a system output of 659 hp (a 40 hp increase over the BMW iX M60 xDrive) in ‘Sport’ mode while torque of 1,100 Nm ensures the iX M70 can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 3.8 seconds and then on to a 155 mph top speed.

That additional power means BMW has also taken another look at the iX’s suspension set-up, with a hydraulic rear axle support bearing helping to create an ‘optimum balance of sporty driving dynamics and ride comfort’, says the men in white coats in Munich.

When it comes to how the new iX looks, BMW says the tweaks it has made ensures the premium EV ‘radiates luxury’.

There’s a redesigned BMW kidney grille, new headlights, and revised front and rear aprons with a higher proportion of body-colour painted surfaces as standard.

The popular ‘M Sport’ trim has been refreshed to include a sculpted front bumper, gloss black rear diffuser, and large air intakes at the front.

Meanwhile 21-inch and 22-inch M light-alloy wheels are available in four new designs as part of the revised M Sport trim, the M Sport Pro package, or as standard on the BMW iX M70 xDrive.

Standard-issue safety tech includes adaptive cruise control, front collision warning with brake intervention, and the BMW ‘Parking Assistant’, which helps the iX to steer itself into parking spaces. Heated seats, heated steering wheel, a head-up display and a Harman Kardon surround sound audio system are all par for the course, too.

The BMW iX M70 xDrive comes as standard with adaptive air suspension and an illuminated kidney grille, among other goodies.

Prices begin at £74,400 to buy outright and we’ll bring you leasing costs soon.
