- Maxus set to launch eTerron 9 electric pick-up
- First fully electric pick-up with standard all-wheel drive in Europe
- Enjoys power of 442 hp
- Maxus promises car-like levels of tech and comfort
This is the imposing new all-electric Maxus eTerron 9 pick-up - and it’s more powerful than a Ford Ranger Raptor.
Chinese heavyweights Maxus already offer an electric pick-up in the form of the T90 EV- with a diesel variant of the T90 expected to arrive later this year.
But the incoming eTerron 9, which opens for orders in October, raises the bar in more ways than one.
Firstly, Maxus says it’s the first fully electric pick-up with standard all-wheel drive available in Europe. That’ll make it much more adept off road compared with the rear-wheel drive T90 EV.
Secondly, the eTerron 9 is also packing some serious punch, with power of up to 442 hp courtesy of a 102 kWh high-voltage battery. Acceleration is described as 'rapid' by Maxus, with 0-62 mph taking place in an estimated 5.8 seconds - though those details are still be confirmed.
When you consider that the meaty Ford Ranger Raptor can be leased with max power of around 290 hp, you can see how the eTerron 9 is going to have instant appeal when it comes to performance.
That battery provides a range of up to 267 miles between charges and also supports 115 kW rapid recharging, which can replenish the energy from 20 to 80 per cent in around 40 minutes.
What’s the catch? Well, the Maxus eTerron 9 will launch with a payload of 620 kg - which is down on most other pick-ups and means it’ll be treated like a car rather than a commercial vehicle when it comes to tax.
Still, the eTerron 9 will pull 3.5 tons, while a hatch in the rear wall of the driver's cab means you can load longer items, such as surfboards and skis, with minimal fuss.
There’s an All-Terrain System with six drive modes - including ‘Mud’ and ‘Sand’ - while air suspension also comes as standard.
Vehicle to Load (V2L) capabilities are also standard, which means the pick-up can even be transformed into a rolling power bank to supply external devices, such as when you’re charging your eBike.
The weatherproof frunk (front trunk) under the bonnet provides an extra 236 litres of storage and also doubles-up as seating for two, presumably while you’re tucking into your picnic.
Looks wise, there’s more than a whiff of Rivian about the new Maxus - which is no bad thing at all.
The cabin is minimalist and uncluttered while you get creature comforts like soft leather upholstery, eight-way adjustable electric seats with massaging and ventilation, and ultra high-beam headlights.
Full specs and prices are due to be revealed in the coming days. But this is a vehicle that’s going to straddle ‘business’ and ‘pleasure’ and you can colour us excited.
