Kia EV4 arrives with benchmark electric range

  • New Kia EV4 arrives
  • Hatchback version comes first, Fastback saloon to follow
  • Gets 388-mile range
  • Makes it the leggiest Kia EV yet
  • Priced from £34,695

The new Kia EV4 has officially arrived - and it boasts the longest range of any Kia electric vehicle to date.

What you’re looking at here is the svelte, low-slung Kia EV4 Hatchback. A Fastback saloon will follow later in the year, but Kia reckons it’s the hatch that most folks will want here in the UK.

With a 388-mile range, the EV4 steals the ‘longest trip on a single charge’ trophy from the smaller EV3 (which gets a 375-mile range).

The EV4’s 388-mile figure is achieved when you opt for the larger 81.4 kWh battery.

Go for the smaller 58.3 kWh unit and you’ll still get 273 miles, which ain’t bad at all for the class, with the base VW ID.3 able to journey up to 240 miles between trips to the plug.

Style wise, the shark-nosed EV4 has more in common with the larger EV6 than the slightly more boxy EV3, and it’ll be one of the sharpest hatchbacks on UK roads.

You’ve got three trims to go at; Air, GT-Line and GT-Line S.

You get an awful lot of kit as standard - though a heat pump is only an option on the most expensive grade.

Base EV4s come with 17-inch alloys, heated front seats, twin 12.3-inch screens and a separate 5.3-inch touchscreen for the climate control, a Kia AI Assistant powered by ChatGPT, sat nav, parking sensors at the front and back, and a reversing camera.

One of the EV4’s party pieces is its ‘relaxation seats’ (available with high end models). Whack the infotainment system into ‘Theatre Mode’ and the front seats will automatically go to a ‘preset posture ideal for watching videos’, says Kia. They’ll also fold near-flat if you need somewhere to have a kip.

The EV4 is competitively priced, beginning at £34,695, which is a shade costlier than the base ‘Match’ version of the VW ID.3 - but still loads cheaper than the £40,000 RWD Tesla Model 3.

Besides those main EV3 rivals, you might also consider electric hatchbacks like the Peugeot E-308 and Vauxhall Astra Electric, as well as the Renault Megane E-Tech crossover.
