Beach buggy vibes for new Renault 4 concept

  • New Renault 4 JP4x4 Concept revealed
  • Roofless take on the regular Renault 4 EV
  • Combines a pick-up rear with a beach buggy aesthetic
  • Helps to plug the Renault 4 Plein Sud - which DOES get a fabric roof

Skateboards in the back, surfboard on the roof, and pray it doesn’t rain - it’s the open-top Renault 4 JP4x4 Concept.

Part beach buggy, part pick-up, the Renault 4 JP4x4 Concept takes the regular Renault 4 and lops off the roof, adds minimalist doors, and raises the ride height by 15 mm.

What you’re left with is an ‘adventure-seeking leisure vehicle with a free, summery vibe’, says Renault.

There’s no roof of any description, barring the surfboard strapped to the top.

And while the French manufacturer says it’s perfect for a day at the beach, they’ve clearly never shivered through a wet weekend in Whitby while trying to protect their chips from angry seagulls.

Is the Renault 4 JP4x4 Concept all-wheel drive?

Yep, the beach buggy version of the Renault 4 is all-wheel drive, unlike the front-wheel drive 4 that you can lease right now with Select Car Leasing.

There’s a second electric motor on the rear axle, allowing it to switch to four-wheel drive mode for driving on sandy terrain.

The name pays tribute to the original JP4, another beach-style, open-top conversion of the classic Renault 4 that debuted in the early 1980s.

Will the Renault 4 JP4x4 Concept make it to production?

Renault says the car could well appeal to retail and business customers who live in sunnier climes.

What about the Renault 4 Plein Sud?

More importantly, though, there’s another summery Renault 4 which you CAN lease - and that’s the Renault 4 Plein Sud.

Instead of a fixed roof, here you get a sliding canvas roof.

Renault says it’s the only electric car in its segment that offers a fully opening roof and it opens for orders later this month.

It’s available with the Techno+ and Iconic+ trims and costs from £27,445 to purchase outright.
