Audi teases spectacular Q6 e-tron off-roader

  • Audi showcases Q6 offroad concept
  • Fully-electric and based on Q6 e-tron
  • Gets 516 PS and colossal amounts of torque
  • Portal axles raise ride height by 6.3 inches

Audi has unveiled an extreme off-road variant of its Q6 e-tron - and it’s packing some seriously impressive performance.

The Audi Q6 e-tron launched last year as both a traditional SUV and the more coupe-like Q6 e-tron Sportback.

But while this Q6 offroad concept sits on the same Premium Platform Electric (PPE) EV architecture as the regular Q6 e-tron, it’s fair to say it’s like nothing we’ve seen so far.

So-called ‘Portal Axles’ - which actually sit above the centreline of the wheels rather than being bang in the middle of them - raise the ride height by a whopping 6.3 inches while the track has also increased by 9.8 inches.

Two electric motors, one on each axle, produce up to 516 PS and ensure the Q6 offroad can ‘can climb gradients of up to 100 percent’. That doesn’t mean the Q6 offroad can suddenly scale vertical walls like a four-wheeled Spider-Man. It just means that for every metre you travel forward, the Q6 offroad can also ascend by one metre, essentially creating a 45-degree angle.

The portal axles also boost the available torque by around 50 per cent - with Audi quoting a combined torque at all of the wheels of up to 13,400 Nm.

The top speed does, however, dip to 108 mph - and you’ll be able to see just how rapid the Audi Q6 offroad is when it competes at the ‘F.A.T. Ice Race’ in Zell am See, Austria, on Feb 6th.

Following a first test drive, Audi CEO Gernot Döllner enthused: “The Q6 e-tron offroad concept is a reinterpretation of quattro. The model shows the potential that our platform for all electric vehicles already has today. This vehicle can claim new ground. We look forward to seeing our customers’ reactions to this highly emotive car.”

We’ve no idea what the Q6 offroad’s electric range is just yet, but you can expect it to be down on the 400-mile max offered by the regular Audi Q6 Sportback e-tron.

The BIG question is whether or not Audi will put the Q6 offroad into production.

It’s unlikely it’ll make it to UK roads looking like it does in these snaps, but Audi has a history of producing jacked-up, more robust ‘Allroad’ models and we wouldn’t be surprised to see a Q6 e-tron wearing a similar ‘Allroad’ badge in the future.
